Madison Homecoming Sets June 7 8 for 1957

Madison's Homecoming for 1957 is scheduled for June 7 and 8. The event features a parade on June 8 at 2 p.m. with bands, color guards, scouts, and the queen and attendants, plus a ballpark program, wrestling show, and fireworks. The homecoming committee is led by W O T Shaffer and includes Harry Green and several civic members.

Officers Banquet Set for Madison VFW Post 5378

The Madison Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5378 will hold an officers installation and banquet this Saturday at 8 p.m. at the New Jackson Restaurant Madison. Attending will be local members, guests from nearby posts and State Commander Eugene W Walker. New officers include Barton B Lay Jr commander Cecil Atkins senior vice commander Arnett Hager junior vice commander A K McNeely quartermaster K K Hall post advocate Lon Holstein chaplain and Dr Wyson Curry surgeon. Mount Hope Garden Club plans May show display in Fayette County

Mount Hope Garden Club officials announce a May exhibit at Memorial Auditorium Fayetteville for December flowers. Mrs. R G Patteson Mrs G Hedges Mrs G E Williams and Mrs C R Harnsbarger lead the project with three awards on the line and George Lechald sent to a conservation camp.

Women of Moose Honor Four Oak Hill Members

Oak Hill Chapter No. 3 Women of the Moose plans a April 10 covered-dish dinner and handkerchief shower for four members Mrs Kenneth Hudson Mrs Patrick Watters Mrs Charles Todd and Mrs George Ellison who recently celebrated birthday anniversaries. Florence Vera will chair a homemaking night program and the group will host a Sixth District State Moose Association meeting after auditing the chapter books April 4 with chairwoman Mrs John Matulis assisted by Mrs Vera.

Services Today For Mrs. Cook in Rockcastle Church

Funeral services for Mrs. Manerva Jane Cook 98 were set for 2 p m at Rockcastle Baptist Church Rockview with Rev Orville Belcher and Rev B J James in charge Burial followed in the Cook family cemetery at Keyrock She died at 9 20 p m Sunday at the Rockview home of her son Virgil Cook Born March 27 1864 at Keyrock she was the daughter of Wilburn and Julia Ann Laxton Her first husband Joseph F Hill was killed by a falling tree in 1893 They had four children Her second husband Ball and Preston Cook produced two children He died in 1900 while Wyoming County sheriff Her third husband James Cook died in 1918 They had one child Surviving children include Rev E I Hill Denny S Hill Miss Grace Hill Mrs L C Bailey Mrs Ray Edwards Clair L Cook and Virgil Cook Grandchildren great grandchildren and great great grandchildren are listed The obituary notes the family’s pioneer roots and local service roles across Wyoming County.

Mrs Bessie Williams Recuperates in Artie After Illness

Mrs Bessie Williams of Artie is recuperating at her home after several weeks of illness. She has been under a physician's care in Beckley for a long period. James H. Workman was a visitor in Beckley on Thursday.

Last Rites For Dr A L Hunter In Madison

Funeral services for Dr A L Hunter will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Madison Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Frank Perry and Rev. Eldon Waltz officiating. Burial will follow in Madison Memorial Park. Died Sunday at his Pax home from a heart attack. He was born June 8 1818 and was a son of the late Dr J W Hunter. Surviving are his widow Barbara, two sons Harry of Madison and Homer of Pax, one brother J W Hunter Jr, three sisters Lottie Hatfield Barbara Canterbury and Stella Cole. Friends may call at the funeral home chapel after 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Wyoming Educators To Mark NEA Birthday

The 100th birthday of the National Education Association will be marked at a Friday meeting of the Wyoming County Education Association at Pineville High School. Mrs Herbert Morgan will preside with a program including singing by Mrs Fred Shutt and Ramona Christian, invocation by Rev Garland Phillips, and a drama Salute the NEA by Pineville Grade School faculty. Five Conley High School girls provide music. The business session will be led by Mrs Eugene Evans, president.
