Proceedings of the Adams County Agricultural Society in Quincy on October 4 1870. The meeting led by President pro tem Sin Noch discussed patron investigation and constitutional papers, with a motion to file papers with the Secretary. A committee was named to secure a hall, D C Wood Chatten and T Butterworth appointed. An obituary notes the death of Hon. Robert Cooper Grier, long-time Supreme Court judge, in Philadelphia at age seventy-seven after years of paralysis. Born March 5, 1794, in Cumberland County, Pa., he rose from Dickinson College to become President Judge of Allegheny District Court, later Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, and a staunch Union supporter during the Civil War era.
At a September 6, 1870 meeting in Liberty Hall Washington DC the Illinois State Republican Association adopted resolutions to appoint a three member committee including the Corresponding Secretary to draft a circular letter offering veterans who lost limbs free access to the artificial limbs act or a monetary commutation. The committee named A B Wicker J M McNeil and Junius Simons. They will report actions to the association and direct applicants to the Surgeon General or Navy Bureau of Medicine for forms and further assistance.
Early last summer Mr Carter and family left McLean Illinois for Neosho Falls Kansas. Mrs Carter was badly injured on a railroad in Council Grove and died at Topeka depot. The party planned to return to Illinois after a city funeral and aid from locals. In Nebraska City a man named Cleary wrecked a wagon over a condemned bridge, losing a mule and breaking his leg.
