The foreign mail to New York on the ninth reports Napoleon's alleged self harm attempt on the eighteenth. He showed two days of elevated spirits, read dispatches from Paris and Hastings, spoke little, and stayed in his room. Dispatches arrived and he grew pale, then shut himself away. After alarms, servants and Prince Murat opened the door to find him faint on a sofa. He recovered after aid.
A Roman Catholic bishop in Batang reports a massive April quake affecting 180 by 90 miles, with extensive destruction and high casualties. Earlier shocks last year leveled Cachar town, killing and injuring many, while the imperial highway near Kongdze tin is said to be impassable.
From the Chillicothe Constitution Oct 6 a deadly street affray in Mooresville left painters J. B. Morgan and Hampton North mortally wounded. Morgan allegedly fired first after a dispute over work, North returned fire wounding Morgan, both men later reported dead. North, a 35 40 year old Virginian native, was well known locally.
