A series of municipal sessions includes the Calendar City Commission work session at 5 p.m. and City Commission at 6 p.m. at City Hall along with Quay County Commission at 9 a.m. at the Courthouse and other boards meeting through the afternoon.
Altrusa Tucumcari meets first and third Wednesdays at noon, Pow Wow Restaurant. American Legion Auxiliary holds bingo Sundays at 2 30 p m in the Bingo Hall Logan. Tucumcari Kiwanis meets Wednesdays at noon at Pow Wow Route 66. Rotary meets Thursdays at Pow Wow Restaurant. VFW Post 2528 runs bingo Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 p m. Anonymous groups meet at various times at S Fourth Street and Divine Connection Church. Calendar items must include event details and a contact number.
Senate Republicans blocked a Democratic plan to tax higher income individuals to pay for keeping federal student loan rates low. They oppose raising the rate and propose funding by axing a public health fund in ObamaCare. The stalemate shadows seven million borrowers facing a rate jump to 6.8 percent when new loans are issued in July.
Citizens viewed a U.S. Army Huey Cobra attack helicopter in front of the National Guard Armory. Tucumcari elected Larry Ingram to the Chamber of Commerce board as mayor King Aitken resigned and Horace Wood became school superintendent with Don Herron as assistant. Gilbert Hunnicutt and Kenneth King received police officers of the year plaques at the Elks Law Enforcement Dinner, and the City Commissioners Room was redecorated with new carpet and bronze paneling.
