Vera Cruz Mexico June 23 Friction between American outposts and Mexican command guarding passes to Mexico City grew acute as efforts to locate a missing Marine intensified. Commanders refused to reveal his name amid possible death of private Park. Americans faced jeers across lines while orders insisted no aggression. Hostility from Huerta troops rose, though exchanges remained mainly nonviolent. Tobacco and small gifts moved between pickets before tensions escalated.
General Funston notified the war department that Heinrich Thobe of the Marine Corps vanished from an outpost duty near Vera Cruz early Saturday morning. Thobe reportedly left with his rifle and ammunition while under observation for mental condition, after threats to run away. A thorough search is underway. Thobe enlisted at Pensacola.
