Bridge Plan Across White River Ties Daviess Pike Counties

Peters burg Indiana December 28 commissioners from Daviess and Pike counties met to approve bridging White river at Rogers and building a road from Washington to Petersburg along the old Erie canal. The plan calls for the bridge to connect over river bottoms two miles in Daviess county with a canal bed suitable for year round travel. Daviess would bond for two thirds if Pike covers one third, while the state highway commission eyed a separate route to Wheatland requiring levee work. the decision rests with the commission.

In Madisonville Kentucky Lee Ellison a black man goes on trial charged with murdering Sheriff Hunter. One hundred national guardsmen patrol the streets as citizens demand the death penalty. Ellison reportedly shot Hunter when he went to the home appealing for help from Ellison's wife. Ellison was captured in Missouri and returned to Louisville for safekeeping.

In Hurley Wisconsin a large group of prohibition agents conducted a raid on alleged liquor traffic. The sweep caught many vendors by surprise as they operated openly. Seventy five agents who had traveled from Chicago served about twenty warrants issued secretly last week by Judge Landis at La Crosse.

French War Orphan Weds Pike Vet in Indiana Strain of Romance

In Petersburg Indiana on Christmas Day Mathilde LaMaze a French war orphan wed Cecil Biggs a World War veteran after a courtship that began in Paris and moved to America. The couple met during furloughs in Paris and decided to marry after the French girl chose to live in the United States. They will reside in Petersburg where Biggs works in mining.

North End House Fire Destroys Home on Harrison Street

A Monday night blaze on Harrison street destroyed the roof and ceilings of Morris Sefus’s house. Fire officials reported a faulty flue as the probable cause. The owner was not located, and neighbors were away when the fire broke out. Firemen faced water supply delays and freezing conditions as they fought to save the dwelling and its contents.

Man Walks to Hospital for Hernia Operation

Andrew Noble 47 of Fairfield Illinois arrived by Southern train Monday and walked to the hospital for an hernia operation. He rode the ambulance to the hospital but insisted on proceeding to the operating room immediately and the operation was performed. Condition serious. Elsas Morris daughter of County Assessor Silas Morris was taken to the hospital with pneumonia and remains seriously ill. Miss Marjorie Kerr underwent tonsil removal at the Methodist hospital and has returned home. Foster Thorne ten of Hazleton had his tonsils removed this morning.

Princeton students elected to lead Gibson county education drive

Burns H. Davison of Princeton was chosen chairman of the Gibson county organization by Indiana University students to lead a program for increased public support of the state educational system. The group notes Indiana and other state institutions need more levy funds as enrollments rise and surrounding states invest more in higher education. La May Ryan of Princeton is secretary. Lawrence Wheeler of Princeton chairs the first district.
