Bureau Sees Quick Construction for Rebuilt Canal Route
Representatives from the South eastern Idaho Reclamation Projects association in Salt Lake City learned the Bureau of Reclamation supports a quick build of a revised canal route. The plan would ditch the six mile hillside stretch of the Preston Riverdale and Mink Creek Canal by crossing Worm Creek divide into Glendale reservoir, reducing landslides and slippage. The bureau will provide survey data and reimburse the changing costs as part of a broader regional water resources program, with further details to come.

Preston chamber votes to affiliate with Eastern Idaho group
Preston chamber of commerce directors voted Monday evening to sever ties with the Southeastern Idaho Associated Civic clubs and affiliate with the Eastern Idaho chamber of commerce which covers most upper Snake River counties. They approved preserving funeral services policy and urged by law changes at January meeting. They also opposed river authorities and discussed parking and a potential public swimming pool. Miss Coila Carver enrolled at USAC in Logan for the coming year.

Eight Local Boys Win Right To Discharges
Eight local boys including Max and Herman Henderson and Lavaun Owens returned home with honorable discharges from the service. Max Henderson earned the Presidential Unit Citation and eight battle stars after serving in Africa and Europe. Herman Henderson fought in Cherbourg and Belgium campaigns earning a Purple Heart and unit citations. Owens, after more than four years in the Army, is noted in this report.

Potato Harvest Underway With Wage Ceilings Set
Potato harvest is now underway in Bannock and Franklin counties with about 1200 acres to be harvested. C. E. Warrington of the Idaho USDA wage board urged growers and workers to reach accord in the field. The crop is excellent but wartime price pressures persist. Mrs. Ethel Batkin Hansen 51 died suddenly of a cerebral hemorrhage at 9 p m Sunday as she prepared to leave a chapel after an LDS singing gathering. Born May 11 1894 in Hanley England she immigrated to the United States in 1921 and lived in Garland Logan and Preston where she held PTA and BPW roles and led the Singing Mothers of the Second ward. She married Oliver M Hansen in Logan in 1927.

A Mound Valley ward reorganization Sunday saw Elder Chas P. McGregor sustained as bishop with Valero Bennett as first counselor and Weldon Charles McGregor as ward clerk. The former bishop D W McGregor and counselors were released after over fifteen years of service. Stake President Milton T. Hartvigsen presided assisted by Alvin K. Lechtenberg and Dee L. Andreasen. Stake Patriarch W W Williams attended as two conference sessions filled with talks. A chorus and solo performed and the capacity crowd included Barbara McGregor and Theon Kendall.

Beet Harvest Starts Oct 8 in Franklin County
The 1945 beet harvest will begin Monday October 8 with receiving stations open for the crop. About 500 Mexican Nationals and German prisoners will help, with local labor and school children needed to cooperate. Growers should organize crews of 20 or more, plan for 100 tons per day, and coordinate fieldwork and irrigation for maximum tonnage.

County Levy Set At 1.86 For 1945 Franklin County Tax Plan
Taxpayers in Franklin county face a 1.86 per 100 assessed valuation levy for 1945 up from 1.40 in 1944. War Veteran of Five Years Purchases Griffeth Radio Shop
Leon M Hill, World War II veteran and Army Air Corps radio man, has bought the Griffeth Radio shop and will assume control on October 1. Hill served five years nine months with forty-two months in the southwest Pacific and previously worked in radio service in Lima Franklin.
