Sheriff Lee Hansen issued a warning Thursday against stray gunfire in and around Preston. A slug from small rifles reportedly landed inside a business doorway on Main Street, though no one was injured.

Cattle Round-Up Now Underway Across Franklin County
The Franklin County Stockmen move to gather nearly three thousand cattle from government forest reserves. First herds moved from Clifton and Dayton basins led by Ellsworth Sapray with about 170 head from Dayton and 40 from Clifton. Next group slated Oct 10 with cattle in Sugar Creek and Cub river corrals on subsequent dates. Mink Creek, Cherryville, and Cottonwood associations also plan rounds.

Peter Whitehead In Critical Condition After Highway Collision
Peter G. Whitehead of Franklin was struck while walking along the east shoulder of Highway 91 half a mile south of the Nashville crossroads. He suffered head injuries and a possible skull fracture and was listed in critical condition at Preston Memorial Hospital. A chicken truck driven by Sylvan Call and an oil tanker from Salt Lake City were involved. Sheriff Lee Hansen investigated the crash.

The Henry Dursteler residence in Mapleton burned to the ground last Wednesday about 8 30 in the morning. The blaze started in the roof and quickly consumed the house while neighbors could not intervene. All furnishings were moved to safety.

Cattle Rustling Charges Filed Against Two Offenders
Two men Thomas and Raymond Smith of Fish Haven Idaho and Ogden Utah face federal and state cattle rustling charges. They were released on $1000 bail and await trial. evidence included tire tread casts and illegal deer meat found at Ogden residence. The theft occurred near the Franklin county line and involved a steer owned by Whit Transtrum. The federal penalty for transporting stolen meat ranges from one to fifteen years.

Pocatello Man Fined After Car Theft Guilty Finding
Russell Neeser of Pocatello, 26, was fined 100 dollars and sentenced to 90 days in jail, suspended on payment, after being found guilty of stealing a car owned by Reed Spackman.
