Beet harvest plans amid labor shortage flagged by sugar company
Jed T. Lewis, factory manager of the Franklin County Sugar Co, announced dates for digging beets and harvesting operations. He said labor shortages persist due to reduced Mexican worker recruitment and that efforts are under way to recruit in California and Utah to fill jobs for a projected 60 day harvest starting early October. The 6000 acre area expects about 14 tons per acre, with Idaho’s beet crop described as the largest in history despite shortages.

Weston driver in high speed crash near Preston
Max Coburn of Weston rolled end over end and then sideways off a curve on Bear River hill west of Preston. Officers reported a high speed pursuit. the car overturned after failing the curve, coming to rest on the sand hill. Coburn appeared in county court and was fined for speeding.

Local Man Held After Hotel Burglaries
Lewis Charles Vance 49 of Salt Lake City is jailed awaiting trial on burglary charges. He was arrested Monday at 5 30 pm by Chief Durwood Hull after Howard Johnson of the Wilford Hotel reported burglaries from several guest rooms. Items stolen include $100 in currency a radio electric razors shirts trousers and various other articles. Johnson’s quick action followed a roomer George Morris noting missing money and valuables.

Franklin Native Eliza Lowe Dies at 84 In Franklin
Mrs. Eliza Doney Lowe known as Aunt Liza died at 84 in Franklin on Tuesday morning. Born August 17 1863 in Franklin she was a daughter of early pioneers John F and Ann Doney. She married James G Lowe in 1880 in the Salt Lake endowment house. Surviving are 12 of her 13 children including Ada Hart Nolan Lowe Preston, Roy Lowe Tyhee, Lucy Gibson Grace Ruben Lowe Franklin and Lydia. She lived in Cherryville for years serving as a school trustee and leading the Primary and relief groups before returning to Franklin.

Fire Near Dayton Threatens Village And Farm
A grass and brush fire started on a western farm near Dayton threatened nearby residents and Dayton itself for a time. Sheriff Lee Hansen and local men brought it under control after flames moved over a half mile of stubble and sagebrush under dry, windy conditions. Rains Tuesday night ended the emergency noted by the sheriff.

Death Is Sudden For David H. Nash
David H. Nash died of a heart attack at 71 while in Preston on business. He was born August 31, 1876, in Franklin, the son of Isaac B. Nash and Martha Howland Nash. He married Ida Larsen on May 1, 1901, in the Logan temple, and moved to Linrose to build one of the county’s best farms. He served 15 years as Linrose school district chairman and was active in church, missionary work in Australia in 1912-13, ward teacher for 35 years, and presided over Linrose Sunday school when it was a Weston ward branch. He was a member of the thigh priests at his death. Surviving: wife Ida. five sons D Ariel Nash, Paul, Aless, Grant, and Lamar Nash of Linrose. daughters Vendla Havertz of Salt Lake City and Hazel Berrett of Layton. 22 grandchildren and one great grandchild. brother I H Nash of Preston. five sisters Nellie Parkinson of Salt Lake and others.
