Senator Henry Dworshak reported from Burley that final details are being worked out to administer the 1955 farm law extra acreage for wheat growers who practice summer fallow. Idaho is eligible. farmers must follow fallow in 1951 and 1952. A hypothetical example shows how the basic formula would grant up to 67 percent of the farmer's 100 acre base.
The Franklin County Young Republicans reorganized at a courthouse meeting. Ray Roghaar was elected chairman with Ray Fackrell as vice chair and Paul W. Thomas as secretary.
In West Side High School elections the Seniors elected Stephen Bastian as president and Sharron Walker as vice president. Marilyn Lemmon as secretary. In the Juniors Sheldon Kendall was president with Clark Sears as vice president and Janice Schwaneveldt as secretary. Sophomores chose Norma Archibald as president Rebecca Reeder as vice president and Mark Beutler as secretary. Freshmen elected Brent Winward as president Kerma Neuen swander as vice president and Terrel Gunnel as secretary. Last spring Jay Schwaneveldt became student body president with Eleanor Jeo as vice president and Margaret Butler as secretary.
Total enrollment in 10 Eastside elementary schools reached 1396 on the first day, up 27 from last year, per Supt. W. H. Simmons. Individual changes include Fairview 68 in 1953 to 66 this year and Central 283 to 295, Jefferson 456 to 469, Whitney 137 to 144, Winder 66 to 56, with other schools showing minor shifts.
At the first fall meeting in the courthouse dining hall, Robert Kazmayer discusses revolts of the have nots against the have nations and colored peoples challenging white domination. Cleo Swenson is introduced as the new club president.
Reid Dunbar of Preston High School, an honor student and son of Mr and Mrs W E Dunbar, was named a recipient of Utah Power and Light four year college scholarships. The awards, open to children of UP&L employees, include $600 annually for four years, on the condition of studying engineering and a guaranteed UP&L job during and after college. Dunbar will study electrical engineering at Utah State Agricultural College and recently married Geraldean Kent of Lewiston.
Preston High plans homecoming events for Friday September 24 led by the Art club sponsor. Activities include a parade with prizes for clubs and organizations, an evening football game versus Burley High under lights at 7 30, halftime by the marching baton corps and band, crowning of the queen, and a postgame dance in the gymnasium.
Farmers may plant wheat for pasture and land protection and still qualify for 1955 price support if excess acreage is disposed of before harvest. Franklin County committee chair Hy Rum Nelson notes the rule mirrors 1954 55 programs and avoids marketing quota penalties. The plan requires excess wheat to be disposed of by a date to be announced next spring and farms to designate excess plantings for verification at closing.
Franklin county Democratic leader and newly elected commander of the Preston post of the American Legion accepts a position as legal counselor for four uranium companies in the Intermountain region. He will relocate from Preston to Moab after winding down in Utah.
First Security system of banks releases the first issue of First Security Newslet ter in the Intermountain area this week. The four page bulletin reports on economic trends in Utah and Idaho and will be issued monthly edited by Dr Elroy Nelson. It covers employment agriculture retail trade mining real estate finance construction and other economic subjects with charts on employment finance and production. Copies are available free at local First Security offices.
Edna Catherine Hulse 65 died Tuesday evening at her Dayton home after a long illness. Born June 4, 1890 in Preston to Claus Clausen and Mary J. Clausen she married EB Leroy Hulse April 22, 1925 in the Logan temple and they have resided in Dayton since. She was active in the LDS church and a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers Dayton camp. Survivors include her husband and three daughters in Preston, plus one grandchild. Funeral services are Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Dayton ward chapel with calling hours at the family home today and Friday morning. burial in Dayton Cemetery.
Orion Follett 50 and formerly of Preston Utah was killed while working on a road construction project near San Diego California on Tuesday evening. Funeral services are set for Saturday at 2 p m in the North Logan ward chapel. Friends may call at the Hall mortuary Saturday from noon until services.
Preston area auto dealers, led by R G Cranney, discuss combating rising repossessions. They note a movement to seek deficiency judgments against buyers who default, with Idaho Supreme Court backing. The group pledges case by case review for financially distressed customers.
Jeannine Beckstead has accepted a call to serve a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints mission in the Central Atlantic states. She will attend the mission home on Sept 22 then depart for Roanoke Virginia on Sept 29. A farewell service is planned the Sunday evening before at 7:30 in the Preston ward chapel. Beckstead is a 1949 Preston High School graduate active in speech and dramatics, studied at BYU, and has worked with Snowflake stake missionaries in Holbrook Arizona. She has been living in Rexburg.
Idaho wool growers plan their fall meeting in Pocatello on Saturday evening September 18. President John W. Noh says the sheep industry faces discouraging prices but growers are addressing the problems with self-help programs and expanded outlets. The event coincides with the day’s show of purebred rams, the 28th annual event, and includes an evening business meeting to review industry issues.
Preston High School held class elections Monday with many students participating. Senior class officers include Gordon Beckstead as president and Clif ford Edwards as vice president, Diane Bodily secretary, Ruth Olson reporter, and DeVerl Cutler social manager. Sophomores elected Douglas Webb president and Clark Johnson vice president with Dixie Smith secretary, LaDawn Wittle reporter, and Donna Neeley social manager. Glen Jepsen was chosen president of the sophomores with Kimber Webb vice president, JoAnn Wright secretary, Julie Simmons reporter, and Roger Cole social manager. Freshmen chose Connie Jean Affleck as leader with Len Edwards vice president, Dixie Dunkley secretary, and Dean Dunkley reporter.
Eastside district 201 elected Dr. O R Cutler chair for the coming year. Holdover treasurer Phenoi Edgley and W S Geddes remain on the board. New members Areta Doney and Howard Swainston sworn in for zones one and two. Architects presented high school addition plans left for study. A special meeting set for next Monday at 8 p.m. to approve plans and specifications.
The West Side Pirates defeated Fielding High of Paris 21 to 0 on Dayton’s field. Mark Tingey scored all three touchdowns and added two extra points, with Gary Porter adding the remaining score. Tingey’s 30 yard run and a late pass completion from Porter highlighted the win.
Ray KF Croshaw announces the county hospital board has secured a time extension on the completion date due to material and equipment delays beyond the contractor's control. Opening of the new addition is pushed to the latter part of October. The new board meets weekly to address staffing and funding needs and invites contributions to the hospital fund with donor nameplates on furnished rooms. The next meeting is Oct 4 to decide on additional help. An open house will be held for Franklin County residents to view the addition.

Preston Indians moved to 6-6 with a 18-13 win over North Cache High on Friday. Jon Hyde and Garden Oliverson scored for Preston with others contributing as they totaled 260 rushing yards and 98 passing yards while North Cache totaled 278 yards.
