Voters in county cities will go to the polls Tuesday to choose city council candidates. Polls open noon to 8 p.m. Registration deadline is Saturday. Preston city office will stay open until 9 p.m. to register. Mrs. Victor Nash the city treasurer reports 1179 have registered so far, 650 from prior elections.
Preston Indians clinched the Southeastern Idaho Conference district crown after a 54 12 win over American Falls. Soda Springs forced a late 20 20 tie with Marsh Valley, dropping Marsh Valley to its second loss and keeping Preston one game ahead. Ivyan Davis led Preston with an 18 senior class departing after a 46 15 2 record over five years.
Preston drivers face strict enforcement as Chief Gary Nelson warns that obscured windshields rear windows and mirrors create dangerous visibility conditions. He cites longer darkness and winter weather as causes and urges proper defrosting wiper care and replacement of smeared blades to prevent crashes.

Franklin County commissioners applied for Hill Burton funds to remodel the hospital and build a nursing home in Preston. They seek 300,473 dollars in matching money, with a 600,000 dollar bond issue approved last year. Total project cost is about 761,000 dollars.
Conferences are scheduled for November 10 and 11 in the Eastside school district. Superintendent Dr. Orson Bowler says no hot lunches will be served those days and students will have a half day. Students attend morning classes while parents meet for conferences in the afternoon. buses depart at noon.
Seven Preston candidates will speak for five minutes each at Meet The Candidates Night at Preston High School auditorium. The event starts at 7 30 p m and is sponsored by the Preston Junior Chamber of Commerce. Emcee will be Donald Gailey with general chair Dale Schwendiman and assistant Myron Evans.
Voters will choose mayors in Preston Clifton and Weston and select city council members in Preston Franklin Clifton and Wet. Candidates include Glen Gamble Lynn S Porter Gerald Fisher Jack Wood W Maurice Tingey and five Preston posts Lee Bergquist Kimbert Christensen Edith Hansen Lyle Shipley Boyd Tim Hobbs Orvill Chatterton W Reed Jamison Elden Kingsford Eugene Griffeth and others. Polling places are Ken's Electric building and the American Legion Hall.
