About 55 percent of Franklin county sugar beets were out of fields by Thursday as farmers rush to the factory before storms. The Preston schools approved a special emergency vacation extension to Monday for field labor needs, while Franklin and new west side district schools plan to reopen Monday. Factory manager Jed Lewis says the crop will be average with higher profits due to prices, though frost reduced growth. sugar content is slightly above normal, near 17.0 percent vs last year’s 17.73 and a county average 16. Officials anticipate a normal factory run this year, contrasting with last year.

Christian James Larsen a 51 year old Weston farmer died after his tractor pulling a rack of beds was struck by northbound train No 31 at a crossing north of Weston. His body was thrown 328 feet along the track. Funeral services were held in Weston with burial in Preston. Two Logan Men Held In Highway Robbery Probe
Logan Utah men Denny Peterson and Joe Goff are held for arraignment by Cache county sheriff in connection with a highway robbery against two Mexican nationals from the Preston labor camp.
