Weldon Nash, salvage chairman for the Preston Lions Club, announces a full scrap metal drive. A scrap center will open south of the Canning Center on South State Street, asking farmers and the public to bring scrap to the file there. Metals must be at least one eighth inch thick and can be sold directly to Parley Shaffer at 58 South Second West for $4 to $6 per ton. Beet Growers Receive 50000 Dollar Payment for 1942 Crop
Franklin County sugar beet growers who produced about 64 500 tons of beets in 1942 receive final checks totaling 49 284 45 dollars. The payment equals 7641 per ton, on top of prior 6 50 per ton already paid, plus 2 65 per ton from government excise tax, bringing total to 9 91 per ton. Harvesting of the 1943 crop is about 38 percent complete. Initial 1943 payments are due November 15 for October deliveries.

Pressure Cooker Explodes At Jefferson School Kitchen
A pressure cooker exploded in the Jefferson school kitchen on Wednesday afternoon, narrowly missing several kitchen aids. Thelma Edwards was handling the cooker when the mishap occurred. A cooker full of beets was in the unit, and the blast left a gory mess on the ceiling and walls. A crack in the cooker was suspected as the cause.

Benjamin Jerome Porter 64, a Franklin resident, died Thursday morning at Budge hospital Logan after two weeks of illness from a heart ailment. Funeral plans are being arranged.
