The Preston Carnegie Library will start weekly reading hours next Saturday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the children's section. Librarian Mrs Bill Hansen says groups will assist, and the program targets children up to sixth grade.
The Better TV Corporation faces an uncertain future for its translators as only 10 percent of the required maintenance funds have been collected. FCC rules require sufficient funds to operate next year or a shutdown. The public was informed that most of the money funds translator operations and the Idaho Channel upgrade, not just a new station. Checks should be mailed to Better TV Corporation Box 168 Preston before the deadline.
A milk truck driven by Val demar C Christensen tipped over on U S 91 South near Preston Tuesday after leaving a soft shoulder and hitting a culvert. There was damage to the truck. In a separate sheriff’s report, about $200 damage occurred to two cars when Eliza O Jepsen pulled away from a curb and struck Myrtle Woodward’s car in Franklin.
Bishop Jack H. Moser of the Dayton ward was named to the Oneida stake presidency on Sunday in a reorganization after Reed R. Hawkes was released as first counselor. Webster C. Maughan, previously second counselor, also assumed a new stake leadership role.
Alvin R. Dyer an LDS apostle told Oneida stake members that prophecies will soon unfold showing the closure of God’s work before the millennium. Visiting speakers included Lynn S. Richards and S. Leonard Love. The conference covered home-centered faith, leadership calls, and moral concerns, with Bishop Moser named second counselor and Dr. Hawkes moving on as presidency member.
Preston high school students will again sell birthday calendars to fund a worthwhile school project. The drive opens this week and sales run through October 23.
Preston officials warned county youths they will be prosecuted for setting fires or turning on fire hydrants on Halloween. Fire Chief Kenneth Hebdon reported 19 fires last year and hydrants opened left reservoirs short of water for a major blaze.
Lester Sears named chairman of the Franklin County Water Resources Advisory Board and established three subcommittees headed by Max Norton, Perth Poulsem Weston, and Daniel Jensen. The panels will study present facilities, agriculture, and water supply, gathering data from the Idaho Water Resource Board and Bear River Basin records to assess needs and costs.
Incumbents in Franklin county towns prepare for municipal elections set for November 7. Weston incumbents Keith Buttars Reed Griffith and Maurice Tingey plan reelection to the Village Board while Preston City Clerk Rhys Swainston notes voter registration deadlines and petition filing rules with October 25 at 5 p.m. cutoff.
Jefferson on Central schools plan pumpkin decorating in local stores with help from parents and the Parent Teachers Association. Principal Wayne Brown says students from six grades will join the annual Halloween costume parade through the Preston business district around 1 p.m. on Halloween. parents are invited to participate.
The Preston's Golf and Country Club board elected eight nominees this week headed by Mae Bambrough Rulon Owen Burt Martin Rulon Dunn Jack Wood Verlan Gunnell Bill Nash and Fred Balis. Members will receive mailed ballots to choose four for three year terms to replace Reid Bosworth Keith Christensen Paul Johnson and Ross Rasmussen on the board. Holdover directors include Clair Cutler Vic Halford Joe Goff Norm Ricks Wayne Doney Walter Ross and W. Paul Merrill, president. The annual awards banquet is planned for November 14 at the clubhouse. tickets are available from board members.
Governor Samuelson named five Franklin County officials to the welfare committee for a three year term. Lindhardt and Acock stay on partial terms as others completed two and three year durations. County commissioners will select one member to complete the five member council after local discussions.
Layne was honored with a Bronze Star for heroism shown in combat near Dak To Vietnam on June 28. Pvt Layne served as a rifleman during a search and destroy operation as Major Harvey L Garrett presided over the ceremony. The event included both the national and Army flags and recognized Layne as a father of a service member who died in military operations.
Dr Loyal Seeholzer will lead a public West Side and Rashtide school district PTA meeting on October 28 at 8 PM. The program covers eye care and detecting laziness in one eye.
In cooperation with local societies the Demonstration Council presents the annual Christmas Gift Suggestions. The event will be held around the county with proposals submitted for observances and charitable giving.
