City Council Advances Canning Center and Utilities

The council agreed to provide sewer and water to the Franklin County Canning Center moving toward a warehouse location near the Texaco Bulk Plant. Bids were opened for alley paving and behind-building resurfacing funded by local business owners, plus bids on a sewer line from Fourth to Eighth South.

Board Members Seek Reelection on Clifton Village Board

Jack Wood and Ralph McCulloch announce plans to seek reelection to the Clifton Village board with terms expiring this year. Election set for November 7, petitions available from clerk Mrs Blanche Henderson. Also notes Eastside school district selling old Jefferson school desks at 50 cents each, per Wayne Brown.

UP Building Underway In Preston

Utah Power and Light moves forward with a Preston service center due for December completion barring weather delays. Burt Martin notes construction is about one month ahead of schedule as crews pave the parking lot and finish exterior work. The new facility will house the construction and maintenance division and storekeepers, while accounting and sales stay at the current site. The plant will allow future expansion to additional facilities on site. The division serves Oneida, Caribou, Bannock from Downey and Lava, Bancroft south, Bear Lake, Cokeville Wyoming, Rich and Cache counties.

Three Escape Injury In Two Roll Wrecks

A truck driver and a 2 year old child escaped injury when the Gossner Milk truck rolled on the Preston Dayon road after the driver failed to keep full attention. A second driver, Jose Garza, 16, skidded off the highway and down a roadside embankment in another county road crash. Ruth Simmonds, 78, was cited for failure to yield when her car collided with Michael Saxton, 15, as both travel west of Preston on a county road to Weston.

Weather Helps Harvests Slow Beet Crop Growth This Season

Good weather slows beet harvesting while boosting cabbage and grain yields. Beets begun in Grace Bancroft and Clifton areas with dumps at Whitney and Cache countys lightly used. Cabbage yields exceed average with operation through mid November and into January for processing.

City Recreation Assistant Director Requested and Program Expanded

Ivan Davis urged the city council to name an assistant director and extend the program to 14 weeks. He requested 851.70 for needed supplies and equipment for 1968 season and proposed financing Legion equipment, improved lighting on the baseball diamond, rebuilt dugouts, and a fence to the first light pole. He also proposed adding Little League football in September and October and basketball in December February.

Smedley Widower Anna Baird Smedley Dies in Salt Lake Hospital

Anna Baird Smedley 54 wife of prominent businessman Sturton W. Smedley died October 10 in Salt Lake Hospital. Born June 10, 1913 in Brigham City, she married Smedley September 25, 1944 at an LDS Mesa Temple. She was active in the LDS Church, Primary and Relief Society. Funeral service Friday at Franklin Stake House with Bishop Dewey Olsen officiating.

Legion Plans Member Drive

The annual membership drive for the American Legion is underway. Dues are payable to Eddie Davis, adjutant, with a 50 cent reduction for dues paid before October 20. A meeting for all veterans and prospective members will be held Thursday at 8 p.m. in the Legion hall.

Officers And Committee Named For Water Study

Lester P. Sears was named chairman of the Franklin County Water Advisory Board to study the Bear River development. Daniel Roberts was named secretary. Ten members include Cleo Swenson, Albert Jensen, Leo Palmer, Joe Hedin, Perth Poulsen, Woodrow Butterworth, Max Norton, and Angus Condie. The group will organize subcommittees and meet with other counties on October 23, as requested by the Ida Water Resources board.

Kindergarten Head Start Opected Programs Approved

The East side school district will hold Head Start and a summer kindergarten program next summer. Both programs are federally funded. Head Start under the Anti poverty program and Kindergarten under Title I. The board approved hiring of six aides with two more for first and second grades. A wiring study at Central school will review new lighting and power sources.

Schools Close For Weekend In Idaho Districts

Students in the East and West Side districts will enjoy a two day holiday this weekend. Teachers will attend institute sessions in Boise and Pocatello. The Idaho Education Association and State Department of Education sponsor the gathering.

Ex Preston Man To Address Seminary At Utah State

Dr. Glenn R. Hawkes, Preston native, will speak on strengthening families at the Leadership School for Women on the Utah State University campus. He and University president Dr. Daryl Chase will discuss leadership at a 6 30 p.m. smorgasbord in the Walnut Room Union Building. About 300 women leaders from across the state attend the school, sponsored by Utah State University Extension.

Preston library board approves youth section folding door addition

The Preston library board approved adding a folding door in the youth section to finish remodeling begun last year. The contract for decor and maintenance was reported, with plans to complete adult patron collections and purchases.

Rotary Cantata Date Scheduled

The annual Rotary Cantata is set for December 20 in the Franklin County courthouse with practices starting November 2. Bill Shumway chairs the event with Harley Greaves and Sherwin Webb on the committee. Elda Carlson Osterloh will direct it again this year.

Sunday Service Awards Honor Vietnam Soldier

In Lewiston Fourth Ward LDS service on October 15 PFC Bob R Layne will be posthumously honored with a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Raymond Layne will accept awards for his son’s actions in Vietnam and Lt Col William A Jones will present the honors during the 11 am meeting.

Church headquarters in Salt Lake City will send Elder Leonard Love and Elder Frank S Wise to Oneida stake center for a meeting at 10 a.m. The pair bring decades of service in mission presidency youth programs and motion picture production technicals. Wise, a native of London, serves Brigham Young University in film production. Love previously led a Netherlands mission and California mission presidency.
