West Side School District trustees approve five day holiday: two for teachers institute and three for harvest vacation. Superintendent Lyle Porter cites labor shortages and farmer needs. students return October 16 with six farm days to assist. Harvest days to be made up in spring. school ends May 23.
Three members of the Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District Board face election Saturday at the district offices in Preston from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Six candidates have filed petitions: Kay E. Anderson Preston Stephen Hinckley Fairview Robert M. Hull Whitney Ralph McCulloch Clifton Jack C Choules Clifton Stewart Buttars Weston. David Smith is polling chairman.
State supervisors and local leaders including Mrs Helen Mulligan and Mrs Carrie Toblers visit high schools yearly to specify home economics curriculum and regulations across the state. The group discusses instruction standards and program details in a statewide review.
The Cache Valley Chinchilla Association schedules a Saturday evaluation day in Preston. Owners register animals 10 a.m. to noon. evaluations start 1 30 p.m. Judge C J Trimble, with 25 years in the business, will assess quality. Members pay 50 cents per animal. non members pay 1 per animal. limit two animals per person.
Building permits issued in Preston authorize construction of two new dwellings and various alterations. The total valuation listed is 47 500 dollars for the projects.
Dennis Bosworth, son of Mr and Mrs Reed Bosworth of Preston, won the Preston and Country Club championship after 72 holes over two weekends with a 303. Wayne Doney was runner up in the championship flight, Vic Halford third. In the first flight Jim Cole won, Sherwin Webb second, Eddie Mather third. In the second flight Bruce Game with Robert Steadman second and Greg Nelson third.
A special Civil Defense meeting is set for Oct 15 at 2 p.m. in the Franklin County Courthouse to form a CSP policy advisory committee for a countywide shelter plan. Sheriff Arando Larsen notes Franklin County will participate in a federal fund shelter planning program with Idaho officials and US Office of Civil Defense.
Kelly Bowles of Fairview was named president of the Franklin PTA last week. Barbara Wright of Franklin is vice president and Phyllis Richards of Franklin is secretary. Assisting officers include Roger Griffeths of Franklin Barbara Spatig of Mapleton Myrna Cole of Fairview. Outgoing officers are Alan Hampton president Sue Hawkes vice president and JoAnn Kingsford secretary.
Mid term report cards went out Wednesday to all Preston high school and junior high school students. Principal Sylvester Anderson urged parents to contact the school with questions and to ask students to show the cards.
Voters in Preston Franklin Clifton Dayton Oxford Weston and Dayton area will face council and mayor contests on November 4. Preston mayor candidates are Lynn Porter and Glen Gamble with Gamble as current council member. if elected a vacancy will be filled. Other filing includes Lee Bergquist Don Hansen Clair Hansen Lyle Shipley Kimber Christensen and incumbent Shipley. Franklin see incumbents Reed Jamizon Tim Hobbs Elmer Porter Orval Chatterton Eldon Kingsford for council. Clifton mayor candidates Harold Fisher Jack Wood with Karl Reeder seeking council. no filings for some seats. Dayton Oxford Weston show sparse candidacy with Morgan Buttar and Maurticer Tingey in Weston.
Elizabeth Ellerman Larsen, longtime LDS Church member, died after a life in Whitney and Richmond. Survived by husband Melvin G Larsen and children Claytor Monson Alene Call Sands and Alton Larsen with 22 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Siblings Henry Ellerman Louise Baxter Adell Nelson Martin Larsen and Alfred Larsen. Funeral Thursday at 1 pm Benson Stake Center with viewing at Web Mortuary. Burial in Richmond.
Charles R. Hobbs with the Institute of Religion in Logan has been named Executive Director of the Light Up America program. He will chair the six member board and work with the Committee of One Hundred to promote a nationwide crime reduction initiative without government funding.
Fire at the Leon Nuffer residence in Dayton destroyed the home and its contents and damaged a car in the garage. The Preston fire department blamed an oil furnace in the basement with the blaze starting after a loud pop. The Nuffer family escaped with three children after waking to flames. it took 45 minutes to report the fire, which also severed local telephone lines.
Four candidates vie for Grace City council vacancies. Incumbents Fred War Vieet and Kenneth Lloyd are joined by Vernon Johnson and Harold B. Lowe, the latter a former Grace mayor.
