Lewiston man killed in Utah accident. others injured

Gail Spackman, 46, of Lewiston was killed crossing Highway 84 near Roy. In a Friday five car pile up near Smithfield, Rex Plowman of Lewiston and Melvin Larsen of Richmond were seriously injured, along with their spouses. Plowman, 46, was president of the Cache Chamber of Commerce and Lewiston State Bank. Survivors include Spackman’s wife and other relatives. the accident involved multiple vehicles and stopped traffic on US 91.

Oneida Stake Conference to Host Dr William H Bennett Visit

Dr William H Bennett regional representative of the Quorum of the Twelve will be the visiting authority at the Oneida Stake quarterly conference. The Oneida Stake Center hosts a leadership meeting at 3:30 pm October 11 with a Sunday morning general session. Dr Bennett, a Utah State University official, will address stake priesthood leaders and ward council members, with a girls youth chorus set to sing. Kathy Forsgren, daughter of Calvin Forsgren, is nearing graduation from nursing at Ricks College and will take RN exams next May.

Priesthood Session Set for Broadcast Saturday

A direct wire of the general priesthood session of the LDS conference will be broadcast Saturday at 7 p.m. The program will air for members of the priesthood in the Oneida and Franklin stakes.

Auction Yard Changes Hands in Cache Valley

Dr. David Beckstead, a Preston veterinarian, took over Cache Valley Livestock Auction from four former owners Geene Wells Bert Winn Ray Fackrell and Merlin Whittle Joe Ward. Clifton will manage the operation for Beckstead while Ward, previously Palmer Implement salesman, steps into a new role. Philip Choules of Preston has been named president of the LDS Institute at Boise State College, son of Mrs. Leda Choules.

Filing Deadline Nears For Cities

Monday marks the filing deadline for petitions to enter municipal races in several counties. Preston City Council has no petitions yet. about six have been taken out with one named as a potential candidate. Mayor David Cutler’s term ends this year, with councilmen Lyle Shipley and Keith Larson also term-limited. Potential mayoral contenders include Kimber Christiansen, Lee Bergquist, Le Grande Burton, and Arnold Sant.

Local Couple Wins Trip To Scotland

FAIRVIEW Mr and Mrs Dallas Gilbert return from an eight day Scotland tour courtesy of the David Brown company. Mr Gilbert won the trip in a sales campaign with David Brown tractors and equipment. They flew from Salt Lake to New York then Glasgow and toured about 1000 miles in Scotland and England. En route home they spent two days in Washington D C and visited relatives in New York.

Licenses Dropped for Two Preston Residents

Franklin county state department of law enforcement suspended two drivers licenses for Alan R. Dunkley and John S. Spatig of Preston for reckless driving. The suspensions have been completed. Fireman Apprentice Jerry D. Lund USN, son of Leonard B. Lund of Preston, serves aboard the USS Kitty Hawk, an attack aircraft carrier, which recently completed an eight month deployment to Vietnam.

Band Instrument Show At Preston High School

Parents and prospective band students are invited to Preston High School for a band instrument display in the band room. The show begins at 8 2.m. Thursday with band director Hansen available to help students choose the right instrument. The program notes high interest as new students join the junior and senior high bands.

Franklin County Farm Receipts Rise 24 Percent Over Five Years

Franklin County farmers saw gross income reach 10 672 000 in the past year up from 8 624 000 five years earlier a 24 percent gain. National survey shows local growers outpace broader areas with higher prices yields and rising demand though much revenue goes to middlemen. Cash sales and government payments dominate while crops account for about one third and livestock dairy and poultry for two thirds.

Porcupines In Preston And Moose In Dayton Stir Town Week

In Preston three large porcupines were shot by city police: one near Central Market, another behind Lars and Fern's Cafe, and a third in front of the Owl, all Saturday to Tuesday. In Dayton residents chased a big bull moose from fields near the highway by the high school and church, through cabbage patches to near the post office, cemetery, and Clyde Palmer’s cornfield before it fled with Palmer and Blaine Porter aboard.
