Beet Harvest Under Way in Franklin County District
Beet harvesting began this week in the district with a slicing campaign at Frank Boat Sugar Co set to run about 55 days until late November. General manager Thomas Heath reported beet tonnage strong early in the week with an expected 80 000 tons, aided by 50 mechanical harvesters and 150 Navaho workers for smaller fields.

Preston Rifle Club Sets Big Bore Shoot Sunday
The Preston Rifle club will sponsor a big bore rifle shoot Sunday on the range on the Don Whittle place west of Preston beyond the Bear river bridge. The event invites hunters as the 1954 hunting season opens and will begin at a time announced by Pete Jorgensen the club president who returned from a trip and will advise marksmen.

Knife and Fork Club to Hear Former Secret Service Man
A former secret service man who served in Mexico Central America and the Far East during World War II will speak at the Preston Knife and Fork club meeting next Tuesday evening at the Franklin County Courthouse. Cleo Swenson, president, announced the program. Arch F. Coleman, a University of Minnesota graduate, later traded in private industry before serving as a U S trade commissioner in Mexico City. He also worked for United Fruit in Guatemala and for an oil company and heavy machinery. Coleman later spied the Gestapo and Japanese intelligence and organized espionage groups from Istanbul during the war.

William Hollingsworth in Korea Nearly a Year
Army Pvt. William W. Hollingsworth, whose wife Maureen lives in Dayton, transferred from the second infantry division to the 24th infantry division in Korea. The 24th division first landed in Korea in July 1950 and spent 19 months in combat before going to Japan for security duty. It returned to the peninsula shortly before the cease fire. Hollingsworth, formerly with West Motor Co. in Preston, entered the army in April 1953 and arrived in Korea last November. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin L. Hollingsworth of Preston Route 3.
