Benson Named Secretary of Agriculture for Eisenhower

Franklin county residents celebrate Ezra Taft Benson a native son of Whitney born August 4 1899 rising from farm boy to secretary of agriculture in President Eisenhowers cabinet. Benson a LDS Apostle son of George Taft Benson Jr grew 4 H to over 500 members and became county agent in 1928 after BYU Iowa State studies.

National 4-H Congress Welcomes Idaho Leaders in Chicago

Two Franklin county 4-H girls Miss Diane Hampton of Moscow and Miss Drury of Pocatello join 2206 members from Idaho and across the United States at the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago. Events unfold at the Conrad Hilton with tours, dress revue, and farewell parties through December 7.

A C Hall Jr Heads Egypt Seeding Mission

A C Hall Jr son of Whitney residents sails to Cairo Egypt for a three month assignment to aid a seeding program planning reseeding studies and a 5 000 000 acre project to start next year in the west desert regions. He will head a forest service reseeding committee and place his headquarters at the American embassy. He notes Arabs endure low living standards and severe aridity with limited crops and vegetation.

Messiah at Logan Tabernacle by Utah State choir

Messiah will be performed by Utah State Agricultural College’s 130 voice mixed chorus directed by Prof. Walter Welti on Sunday December 7 at 4 p.m. in Logan Tabernacle. Soloists include Mary Jane Handy Brent Nash and Beth and Barbara Olsen with Beth Olsen having previously understudied the soprano lead.

Lights to Go On Free Christmas Program Friday

Preston merchants will turn on the city Christmas lights installed this week by city and power company workers. Prizes of 14 turkeys and 21 one pound boxes of candy will be awarded at the corner by the bank. Stores stay open until 9 p.m. Santa will flip the switch. The opening continues Saturday with a 10:30 a.m. Roy Rogers movie at Isis theatre, plus cartoons and a serial, followed by Santa giving each child an all day sucker.

Navy Seaman Harley D. Golightly in Korea amphibious maneuver

Seaman Harley D. Golightly, son of Mrs. Myrtle D. Go lightly of Preston, served with the Tactical Air Control Squadron aboard the USS Mount McKinley. He participated in a joint amphibious mock invasion off Korea's northern coast to train for a real landing, with cruisers destroyers and carriers softening targets before amphibious forces moved in led by the USS Iowa.

Millar Named Idaho State Chairman for January Egg Month

Ralph Millar owner of Millar's Poultry Farm & Hatchery was chosen state chairman to promote January Egg Month in Idaho. Also named were Reid Merrill Co E Lampman C C Slayden Tom J Chester Marshall Keyes Frank Wilson Leon Forsgren Tom Jorgensen Russell Black and Ray Miller as committee members. A kickoff meeting occurred in Pocatello November 20 with strong enthusiasm for the nationwide movement.

Two AC Students Help Write Copy For CITIZEN

Two USAC journalism students Bob Evans and Reed Clayton visited THE PRESTON CITIZEN on Tuesday to learn operations. They toured presses and linotypes, rewrote stories, and produced articles while sharing college experiences and future newsroom interest.

Hone Takes Part In Joint Army Navy Amphibious Maneuvers

Keith Hone, 21, son of Mr and Mrs Eugene Hone of Preston, selected for army navy amphibious maneuvers at Coronado California from Oct 27 to Nov 27. Corporal Hone stationed at Camp San Luis Obispo in the 16th signal battalion to provide communications between amphibious units. He attended Preston High School and worked as a lineman for the local telephone company before enlisting March 13, 1951. He currently serves as terminal repeater station chief.

Polio Chapter Receives $2500 Aid for Franklin County

The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis sent Franklin County polio chapter a $2500 check to aid local patients. Chapter chairman Mrs. Donald Poage announced the donation as Franklin County exhausted its March of Dimes funds during the polio season.

4 H honors W M Robinson for Franklin county work

W M Robinson of Franklin received the "Al friend of 4-H" award at a Bannock hotel ceremony in Pocatello. Boyd Baxter presented the plaque, while about 150 4-H leaders and friends attended the training meeting and banquet. Robinson chairs the Franklin County Fair board, recognized by county club leaders.

Knife Fork Club To Hear German Foe of Hitler

Gerhart H. Seger author editor and former Reichstag member will speak at Preston Knife and Fork club at the courthouse on Wednesday December 3. Seger once opposed Nazi rule in Austria and was imprisoned in Oranienburg before escaping and later moving to the United States with his wife and infant daughter after being helped by English friends. 17 Year Old Bags 325 Pound Deer Near Niter

Allen Martin, a 17 year old Preston High School senior and cheerleader, shot a 325 pound deer five miles east of Niter near Grace during opening season. It took five men to haul the massive buck after a rugged hunt amid poor weather.
