Fourteen large turkeys and 21 one pound boxes of candy will be given as prizes when Preston merchants hold their annual Christmas opening Friday evening November 28 at 8 p.m. Santa Claus will switch on the lights and greet youngsters. Stores stay open until 9 p.m. on opening night.
The region ended a record long dry fall season as snow and rain fell Friday and Saturday. Snow disrupted sidewalks Saturday after a heavy wet fall Friday night. Farmland gained moisture, aiding winter wheat planted in dust, and locals note an unprecedented dry spell lasting into mid November.
Charles Johnson of Treasureton ward hid a wood chisel in the old ward chapel in 1906. During demolition, the tool was found and positively identified by a son-in-law. Russell Johnson, a carpenter on the new chapel, received the family relic. Charles Johnson died in January 1930.
Valene Pearson 15 of Preston won state honors in Idaho Falls for 4 H Make It Yourself With Wool clothing and styling. She received a portable sewing machine as second place award, accompanied by her mother and grandmother.
Wayne Summers announces 1953 motor vehicle registrations go on sale December 15 at the County Assessor's office. Plate display begins January 1, 1953 and 1952 registrations extend to February 14, 1953. 1953 mileage use tax reports stay monthly with January due to the tax collector. Registrations must be tied to a valid Idaho title in the registrant's name. Lien holders have received required title information to secure 1953 registrations.
Utah Power and Light Co will light streets and parks with free electricity from Dec 1 to Jan 1. Preston division manager J Newell Stephens said AP and L will supply power and wiring at no charge. Last year the utility provided 233,843 kilowatt hours for 39,168 bulbs in 105 cities, including 7,672 bulbs in 21 Preston division communities.
The Franklin soil conservation district and Franklin County Farm Bureau sponsor a lecture Thursday December 4 with Tom Kelly, renowned platform cartoonist and former U S Soil Conservation Service representative. He has delivered over 4 800 illustrated talks in 20 years and will speak at 8 p m in the high school auditorium on There’s More to Dirt Than Meets the Eye.
Mr and Mrs George Simmons of Weston learned their son Dale was seriously injured in an automobile crash near Long Beach California He was en route to work when fog limited his visibility and he struck the side of a freight train He sustained chest injuries a broken ankle knee injury and shock His condition was described as serious early this week with slight improvement noted.
Television brings business to Preston with Albiston Radio and TV opening on South State in the new store beside the Preston Professional building. Owner Mirlend Albiston, a county native with 22 years in radio, invites the public to visit and see TV operation and he will give away a new TV set as an opening prize.
Idaho Republican Chairman William S Campbell lauded Franklin county workers led by M B Funk for boosting the Eisenhower campaign. He praised grass roots organization, unity and bipartisan support and urged continued local activity to maintain GOP gains and civic trust amidst a landslide.
The Franklin County Tuberculosis Assn has reorganized with new officers and plans for the Christmas seal drive starting next Monday. Officers include President Rulon Dunn Secretary Mrs J N Stephens Treasurer Mrs Emma H Callan and Publicity Mrs R S Fulton. A Preston High typing class is preparing letters to all Franklin homes.
Preston High hosts the annual FFA Harvest Ball on Wednesday at 8 30 p m with Dean Bennett as chair. Merlin Smith’s orchestra provides music and a carnival plus two turkeys as prizes accompany the event. Queen candidates include Marian Bell Ollie Jean Nelson Sandra Condie and Rama Drury. Eugene Hall presides at the coronation.
On November 12 the hog pool reported 232 hogs weighing a total 50 250 pounds. Of these hogs, 178 were held and 178 sold to Cudahy Packing Company of North Salt Lake City for 6 637 23 dollars.
The Franklin County Sugar Co at Whitney will complete the beet slicing campaign, ending the plant’s shortest run in company history. Harold R. Olsen becomes factory superintendent, aiding Thomas Heath to expand acreage. Don Poage rises to assistant superintendent, with Julius Cabutti and H. J. Klinge continuing as assistants. Sheldon Beckstead shifts to beer and foreman, Paul K. Smith oversees agriculture, Van Ness Hansen remains cashier, and Beckstead may serve as watermaster for the Preston Whitney Irrigation Co in 1953.
The new Plymouth model, described as the most completely new Plymouth in 25 years, is being shown today in Preston by West Motor Co. and Martin & Hone at 250 North State Street and 29 West Oneida Street. Plymouth Motor division officials praise the car for safety comfort and easier handling, inviting customers to visit the showrooms to see the “tribute to engineers” that minimizes roll pitch and jounce.
Three vehicle wrecks kept county officers busy this week near Preston. Saturday on U S 91 a passing man sideswiped Lucy Tanner, 1951 sedan, tearing off a rear fender. Wednesday near Preston two crashes involved John Roberts and Harold Hull. injuries minor. Deputy Rex Fackrell investigated all incidents as Sadie Hawkins activities at West Side High School were noted.
John Lewis Johnson of Kansas City issued a fraudulent 1500 check on a non existent Washington bank while posing as a government agent. He was apprehended in Rock Springs Wyoming on October 28 and brought back to face District Judge Isaac MacDougall. He pleaded guilty and received a sentence not exceeding 14 years. Johnson has prior corrections in San Quentin Leavenworth and Terre Haute and is wanted by multiple states.
Frank Gilbert of Fairview has been re-elected for a third consecutive term as president of the Franklin County Farm Bureau federation. Officers chosen last Wednesday in the courthouse include Eldon Hansen of Weston as first vice chairman and Eugene Paskins of Treaserton as second vice chairman. Karl Ballif was appointed secretary and insurance agent.
Local Lions Club hosted a zone meeting with clubs from Malad Downey and Lava Hot Springs in attendance. Guests included Conrad Saunders Bancroft district governor and other officials. Keith Larson served as master of ceremonies and F. P. Champ of Logan gave a special talk. Musical numbers came from Malad and Lava clubs.
Preston city officials announced automatic chlorination was installed in 1952 alongside existing fluoridation. The system, housed with the fluoridation plant, uses top equipment to provide safe drinking water and long-lasting treatment. City Superintendent C. I. Goff praised the up-to-date facilities and expected years of operation. Fluoridation began earlier, with construction of the related building completed in 1951 and equipment installed by early 1952.
Lt Col Jesse Stay announces nine BYU air force ROTC cadet officer promotions. Among them Joe J. Christensen of Banida is named cadet lieutenant colonel as the program expands with new assignments to support rapid growth on campus.
Mr and Mrs Alonzo Handy mark 50 years of marriage with an open house Sunday from 3 to 6 pm. Married November 19 1902 in the Logan LDS temple they previously lived in Whitney and Preston, later ran a hotel and engaged in church work. They have seven children 19 grandchildren and request no gifts.
