Icy Highway 34 Collision Near Preston In Snow
A two car collision occurred Saturday night four and one half miles north of Preston on state highway 34. Both drivers lost control on the ice. vehicles skidded into the crash. Participants were D Marcus Hamson of Salt Lake City and Verl Christensen 16 of Ban ida. No injuries. damage estimated at 150 dollars to the Hamson car and similar to Christensen auto.

Train Hits Gas Truck at Preston Crossing
At about 10 am Friday a gasoline truck driven by Don Newbold stalled at a railroad crossing in Preston near Edwards Floral greenhouse. A locomotive struck the empty truck, pushing it 66 feet before stopping. Newbold sustained only minor bruises and the truck suffered about 1800 dollars in damage.

Farmer in Critical Condition After Tractor Crash
Merlin Rawlings, 64, of Fairview, remained on the critical list at Franklin County Memorial Hospital after a high way 34 collision four miles south of Preston Saturday night. He was driving a tractor with a manure spreader when rear ended by Roy Esplin, 22, of Preston. The tractor lacked tail lights. Rawlings suffered a fractured pelvis and internal injuries as the vehicle rolled over him. Esplin sustained minor injuries and his car was damaged about $700. Rawlings family was summoned to his bedside.

As of February 1959, old age survivors and disability insurance benefits were paid in Franklin County at 443 376 dollars per year. Stan ton S Thompson, manager of the Pocatello social security district office, said the increase is about 50 percent from last year. He noted the payments support local business since funds are spent on essentials. Nationally, Social Security benefits neared 10 billion dollars annually in February.
