Turkey Days Offer Weekend Giveaways At Courthouse

Turkey Days promote Friday and Saturday events with 25 turkeys given away starting Friday at 1 p m in front of the courthouse and another 25 on Saturday at 1 o'clock winners must be present to claim prizes. The sale includes household appliances groceries drugs toys cafe dinners autos furniture and more with many staple products and services on offer.

Local Girls Score High in Annual Wool Contest

Portia Cole of Franklin county won first in the pre deb division at Blackfoot for the Make It Yourself with Wool Contest. The Preston High sophomore and 4 H clothing club member, daughter of Vern Cole of Fairview, is among six Franklin county girls placing in junior and senior divisions with wool outfits. Winners in junior include Karen Wheelwright Pocatello first and Julie Hammond Preston second. other placings go to Tamra Meek Riverdale Marian Beveridge Preston and Janet Baker fifth ward. In the senior division Georgia Balls Pocatello took first with LaDene Palmer Preston earning third.

Franklin County Potato Growers Hear Seed Certification Report

Franklin county growers at Grace last Thursday heard Idaho Crop Improvement Association inspectors report 1053 more certified seed acres in 1959 but 96 fewer accepted for certification than 1958. Total certified acres reached 16506 across 597 growers with varieties including Early Gem Kennebec White Rose and Netted Gem. Earl Spencer warned of leaf rot ring rot and nematodes and urged planting only certified seed. Attendees included Bryce Jensen Floyd Jensen William Andra and county agents Daniel Roberts and De Vere Tovey.

Federal Aid Still Defended by Idaho Senator

Sen. Frank Church defends federal grants as a key driver of Idaho’s economy. Speaking at a Franklin County Democrats luncheon, he notes Idaho receives far more in federal benefits than its taxpayers contribute, while criticising calls to cut aid. Franklin County Trio Wins State Honors at Farm Bureau Event

Franklin County trio Anna Lee Fisher Sharon Rawlings and Joan Woodward with Lynda Knudson won state honors in the Idaho State Farm Bureau program held with the Bannock Hotel event. They performed as Diana in white dresses with red corsages and will compete at the National Farm Bureau convention in Chicago in December. An Ada county male quartet was an alternate, and Jim Johnson of Twin Falls won the talk meet contest with Franklin county’s Jay D Schwaneveldt as alternate. Johnson will seek national honors.

Motorcycle Rider Injured In Preston Crash

An afternoon collision in Preston on Fourth South and Second East involved Ezra Foss's car and a motorcycle driven by 19 year old Melvin Anderson. Anderson sustained bruises and lacerations and was hospitalized. Foss was uninjured. Police estimated vehicle damages at 75 to 100 dollars.

Beets, teachers honored. sugar company reports 1959 crop

Lyle Shipley of Franklin county highl ights as vice president of Idaho's fifth district teachers association. Beets payments begin for October deliveries totaling 92,700 tons for 1959 with a projected value near 1.36 million dollars. Final 1958 settlement was 1.09 per ton on 7, 200 tons. The Franklin County Sugar Co reports operating costs and planned expansion, with acreage expectations for 1960.

Local Canning Center Plans Closing for Season

The Franklin county canning center will close for the season on Wednesday November 24. Patrons used the facilities to can produce meat and fruit from their farms and gardens with strong interest in staples like pork and beans pudding and juices. Local Manager Leaves for Special Board Meeting

Horace E. Hayes, manager of the Prudential Savings and Loan office in Preston, left Tuesday morning to attend a special joint board of directors meeting of Prudential Savings and Loan Assn. and Idaho Savings and Loan Assn. in Twin Falls. En route he will confer with Ernest Garrett, manager of the Pocatello office, and Keith Mouritsen, manager of the Burley office. Hayes expects to return to Preston on Friday.

Breeders Group Plans Banquet at Franklin County Courthouse

The Valley Breeding Association of Franklin County will hold its annual meeting and banquet in the courthouse basement at 8 p m Monday November 30.
