West Side High Announces Baccalaureate and Commencement Plans

West Side High seniors graduate Monday with a baccalaureate service at 8 p m in Weston ward chapel and commencement in the same venue. The program features student solos duets and a keynote by Pres Louis Madson USAC with artful prelude by Edna Kofoed and Ann Hansen.

Students At West Side High elect Setarip Suspender Set

Secret ballot at West Side High School ends with Setarip Suspender Set sweeping victory over Smear Proof party. Assembly at 2 pm featured humor and poems, with Wiley Callister first performing a saxophone solo and Martha Jensen guiding a humorous dictate.

Four-H Leaders Return After Lake Coeur d'Alene Course

Mrs Merlin Smith Mrs Marion Perkins and Mrs Daniel Roberts completed a recreation training course at Chateau Lab Lake Coeur d Alene Idaho. They will serve on the Franklin County 4 H club camp committee and run recreation and handicraft activities at Bear Lake camp July 13 14 and 15. The leaders left Preston May 12 traveling via Montana and Spokane returning through Lewiston McCall and Boise.

Graduation Program Held Here Friday By Local Seminary

A local seminary held its graduation exercises Friday night. About 106 young people received diplomas as part of the commencement program themed Eye hath not seen. Collette Eberhard opened with an organ prelude and a girls’ chorus performed Lift Thine Eyes before Lynn McKinlay gave the address to graduates.

The West Side High School junior class held a lawn party on Thursday May 14. Thirty five members attended enjoying baseball games barbecue and dancing in the gym to recorded music.

Saturday May 23 sees Preston observe Poppy Day with local Legion Auxiliary members on streets selling artificial poppies. Funds raised aid disabled veterans through the veteran’s support effort.

Hansen Receives Distinguished Flying Cross for Korean War Duty

Lieutenant Hansen, radar navigator on a B-26, earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement in Korea on June 20, 1952. He advised the formation's position amid rugged terrain and enemy artillery, bringing credit to the United States Air Force. He was awarded at Columbus Air Force Base by Brig. Gen. Waldron. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Hansen of Preston, married to Beverly Davis.

Pete Jorgensen Teaches Em How At Layton Meet

Pete Jorgensen demonstrated rifle technique Sunday at Layton Utah as part of the Layton club small bore meet. The local blacksmith scored 397 of 400 on a 50 yard range, hitting 37 of 40 bullseyes. The feat, near the size of a 25 cent piece at 150 feet, impressed observers given his near 76th birthday in two weeks.

National Rural Youth Leader to Visit Preston Meeting

Warren Newbury national president of Rural Youth of the Farm Bureau will speak Monday at 2 PM in the Preston courthouse for district meetings serving Bannock Power Oneida Bear Lake Cari bou and Franklin counties. Rural Youth leaders are invited. The local Franklin county group hosts annual talk meet and talent find contests and has long organized activities led by former presidents and advisors.

Wayne Cottle Named Marshal in Tooele Armed Forces Day

Pfc Wayne Cottle and his family were honored on Armed Forces Day in Tooele Utah. A special car took them to a local hotel where they were breakfast guests of Mrs Edith Hood and husband the official hostess. Wayne and Hermann Cottle rode in the parade with Wayne named marshal of the day. The president of the chamber was involved.

School Election Set for Tuesday in Eastside District

Idaho district voters head to polls Tuesday May 26 from 1 pm to 7 pm at Jefferson school to decide a proposed three mill maintenance levy. The measure would fund district operations for the next year, with estimated $424 34 thousand needed and expected state county aid of $202 065 plus $23 846 other receipts. Eligible voters include district residents who are parents guardians of a child under 21 or tax payers and spouses of such taxpayers.

Preston Indian cinder stars head to Boise for the state meet after placing third at Pocatello regional. Coach Evan Sorenson’s mile relay set a 3:24.4 state mark though not official for state meet. Pre-School Clinic Planned at Jefferson's School May 25 and 26

A pre school clinic will be held at Jefferson's school on May 25 and 26 for children from West Side Franklin Whitney Fairview Riverdale Mink Creek Oneida Station Winder and Banida. Examinations run 9 to 11 a.m. on May 25 for most areas and 9 to 11 a.m. May 26 for Preston children. The aim is healthy school start through preventive care including vaccination and health checks with parents urged to attend and bring birth certificates and a bath towel.

Preston High School will graduate 143 members of the class of 1953 at commencement exercises tomorrow evening.
