West Side Baccalaureate First Senior Ceremony

Franklin county plans a baccalaureate service for 37 West Side high school seniors this Sunday at 4 30 p m. It precedes the May 27 graduation for West Side and Provo High School. Dr John Carlisle of Utah State University will speak as the program includes Stanely Bingham Reva Archibald and others with a quartet.

Welfare Leaders to Speak at Franklin Stake Conference

At Franklin Stake Conference primary two eLDS leaders will address the event May 22 and 23 in Preston. LeRoy A. Wirthlin, Salt Lake City physician-surgeon and member of the General Welfare Committee, and Kathryn F. Garff of the Primary General Board will conduct the sessions with Stake President W. Dean Palmer presiding. Special Welfare and Primary meetings are planned for Saturday with general sessions Sunday at 10 am and 2 pm at 213 South 2nd East, Preston. Visitors welcome.

Lions Plan Big Sweep To Sell Brooms For Good Causes

Preston Lions set for next Wednesday door to door broom sale under Elmer Oliver son chairmanship. Proceeds fund hospital television gear and eyeglasses for the needy with brooms made by blind workers in Boise.

PHS Mechanics Win State Trou ble Shooting Contest

The Preston High School student auto mechanics team won Idaho’s Plymouth Trouble Shooting Contest in Boise by locating and fixing 16 malfunctions in 68 minutes 37 seconds. Brent Porter and Ronnie Lowe led the team to first place, with Boise Senior High and Idaho Falls Senior High taking second and third. The Idaho champions advance to Detroit June 21 23 for the National finals with a chance at 16 700 in scholarships.

Poppy Day Declared in Preston by Mayor and Legion Auxiliary

Mayor Russell G. Cranney proclaims Saturday as Poppy Day in Preston. Mrs. Ned Hutchins, president of the Preston American Legion Auxiliary, asks residents to buy and wear memorial poppies honoring the nation's war dead. Poppies are produced by 6000 disabled veterans whose earnings support rehabilitation and child welfare funds for veterans families.

Fire Destroys Whitney Barn and Shed

A large hay barn belonging to Wayne Cole at Whitney burned Friday afternoon, with corral fencing and farm equipment damaged. Some 12 to 15 tons of hay were destroyed per the Preston Fire Department. cause is unknown and there is no value estimate. A shed at 240 North State burned Tuesday evening, likely caused by children playing inside.

Nine Stake Dance Festival Planned For Preston Dancers

Dancers from Star Valley Wyoming travel to Preston June 5 for a nine stake festival sponsored by the Mutual Improvement Association. Clair Ebert chairs the event with Sherman Lindhardt as co chair. Jack Allred and regional heart directors lead the dancing with stakes Franklin Oneida Benson Potneuf Barnock Idaho Montpelier Bear Lake Star Valley involved. The Preston High School football field will host a constructed stage lights portable bleachers and practice sessions ahead of the all church Dance festival in Salt Lake City.

Speed Up Seen On Highway 34 Progress

Speed up noted on the Cleveland Thatcher stretch of Highway 34 with about 15 percent completion and ahead of schedule. Bids for Riverdale Treasureton summit likely this fall. Fife Construction started April first on Cleveland Thatcher at a contract of 394000 dollars. The project aims to finish by October this year with completion of Treasure ton Cleveland by summer 1967.

Scout Camporee Honor Court Set By Scouts

A Court of Honor for the Franklin Scout District will be held Friday at 8 p.m. in conjunction with the annual District Camporee. The camporee will take place on the Mink Creek Ball field Friday and Saturday, with a special court of honor around the campfire and a long list of awards to be presented.

Black and White Days Opens This Weekend

North Cache Valley hosts the 50th annual Black and White Days with a large dairy event and a record pre registration. About 80 4 H youths will show Holstein cattle plus a horse show Cache Valley Rodeo Queen Contest and exhibits are planned with Eugene Smith named committee chair.

School Repairs Studied and Board Members Elected

Bids totaling about 56,000 for repairs to Eastside school buildings and Nielsen Gymnasium were opened and held under advisement along with bids for school buses. Robert Lindhardt and Ted Larsen were elected to the Eastside school board, taking office in June. A key bid issue was the missing electrical bid, with C A Sundberg to obtain new bids for the next meeting.
