Boxing Champion Gene Fullmer to Speak at Utah Youth Conference

Gene Fullmer former world middleweight champion will speak at a seven stake youth conference in Preston Utah in June. Organizers include the Portneur Ida Bannock Smithfield Benson Franklin and Oneida stakes with about 2200 attendees. The event runs June 25 26 27 at the Oneida Stake center Franklin stake center and Preston high school featuring Betty Kilpack Mia Maids Explorers Laurels and local MIA leaders plus a World of Spots session on June 26.

Guide Children and Fast Guidance at Franklin Stake Meet

At a Sunday quarterly conference the Franklin Stake heard leaders urge guiding children and obeying the fast. Speakers included Kathryn F. Garff of the LDS Primary general board and LeRoy A. Wirthlin of the general welfare committee. Garff praised stake workers and urged practical use of modern conveniences without neglecting principled instruction.

Tractor Firm Appointed Ford Dealer in Franklin County

Farm Equipment Company of Preston named authorized Ford dealer for Franklin County. Earl Nelson to head the firm with an open house Friday to unveil the 65 Ford Tractor line. Guy Harkey praised Nelson’s experience and staff as a valuable addition to Ford dealer organization.

Drive Chairman Named For Area Red Cross

Jim Jenkins, an area insurance man, was named chair man of the Franklin County Red Cross drive by Richard Hendricks. The drive begins June 1 with a complete organizing plan to collect. The county chapter has aided the needy and funded the national organization. Jenkins is a Preston native, Utah State alumnus, and a former LDS missionary to the Great Lakes.

Memorial Day Service At Preston Cemetery

A memorial service is planned at Preston Cemetery on Monday at 11 30 p m led by the American Legion with La Grande Spatig. The program will include the posting of colors and a gun salute.

Yellowstone Ranger Explains New Seven Dollar Sticker

Ranger Ralph Roberts outlines a seven dollar annual recreation-conservation sticker. It admits the holder and car occupants to national crest campgrounds, national parks including Yellowstone and Glacier, and other areas, with fees set by the 1965 Land and Water Conservation Fund Act. Optional single entry or season-long fees may apply.

Pirettes Start Citizen Subscription Drive For Charity

Twenty girls from the West Side high school marching corps the Pirettes begin a subscription drive for The Citizen to raise 500 for the corps and 100 in prize money. Participants listed include Idana Cahoon Christine Griffeth Trudy Campbell Kay Schwaheveld and others. The drive runs until June 30 with points awarded for each new or renewed subscription and weekly check ins. The top sellers receive bonuses including a 100 prize for the best salesperson and 15 to 25 dollar awards plus a group dinner for top finishers.

Farmer Dies In Tractor Accident On Winder Farm

Glenn E. Smith a Winder Utah farmer died after a tractor rolled back while he was hooking it to a manure spreader. He was found by his wife pinned between the machinery. He was born April 20 1915 and survived by his widow three daughters three brothers and three sisters. Funeral services set for Saturday at noon in the Winder ward chapel with interment in Preston Cemetery.

Certified Seed Sign Up Due In Franklin County

Franklin County farmers must complete their seed certification applications for the grain variety before June 1. Eligibility requires planting certified or foundation seed on clean ground and paying a one dollar Idaho Crop Improvement Association membership plus inspection fees of five dollars for ten acres or less and thirty-five cents for each additional acre. Application blanks are available at the County Agent office per De Vere Tovey.

Scout Receives Eagle Badge in Cache Valley Area

Garth C. Porter was awarded the Eagle Scout badge by FRANKLIN-Fielding Winward and Hart Bulock of the Cache Valley Council. Porter earned twenty one merit badges and carried his parents to the ceremony. His mother Ada Porter received a special pin for her assistance.

Preston High School and West Side High School will hold commencement rites for 193 seniors. Preston students hear Dr. Oral L Ballam at the gym. West Side graduates listen to Dr. Edwin Petersen at the Dayton LDS chapel. The Preston theme is Our Challenge with multiple student speakers and a full program led by Dean C Smith.

Thatcher Elementary School Library Reopens In Style

Thatcher teachers expanded the library into a spacious room last fall. A vacated classroom was converted with new shelves, tables, and equipment. The PTA funded film strips, Halloween Carnival proceeds bought books, and a 9 by 12 braided rug was added for story hours.
