Preston High Choir Wins First Rating at Idaho Falls Contest
Preston high school's 84 voice a cappella choir directed by Lyle Shipley earned one of two first place ratings at the Idaho Falls music festival last week. Professor Lawrence of Washington University praised the performances as some of the most thrilling heard at the festival. The choir presented Hungarian Dances by Brahms and Lord I Want to be a Christian arranged by Thomas. Continued on Page 8.

Pioneer Mother Ruth Crockett Dies at 89 in Preston
Ruth Clarkson Crockett, 89, pioneer settler and longtime Preston resident, died Monday after a brief illness at her home. Born in New York City on Sept. 12, 1857, she crossed the plains in 1860 and helped establish the Sandcrest farm area south of Preston. Survived by nine of twelve children, forty-five grandchildren, fifty-four great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren, she was active in the Latter-day Saint church and community.

Funeral services were held in Pocatello for William B. Wright 88 who died May 8 at his son Roy’s home in Thatcher. He came to Franklin in 1860 and became a leading stockman in SE Idaho. Wright helped run The First National bank and later First Security bank and served two terms as Bannock county commissioner. A. L. Merrill paid tribute to his banking partnership.

Beet Laborers Arrive for Franklin County Beet Season
About 110 Mexican nationals joined the local labor camp this week to thin 6500 acres of sugar beets with plans to add 225 more early next week and 65 the following week, totaling nearly 400 workers.
