Friday and Saturday specials bring big savings on groceries clothing paint drugs auto work meats and farm items. Preston merchants advertise free car lubrication and Easter flowers with special dinners at local cafes during the Easter Parade of Values event.
The Preston High School music solo contest returns next Wednesday April 1 at 8 p m in the high school auditorium. Sponsored by Mr and Mrs Don Pack the event began in 1953 and features winners from years past plus a Utah State University string quartet as guest performers under Dr Andrew Gales. Judges drawn from Utah Idaho teachers. public invited with no admission charge.
West Side High School presents the musical comedy Moonlight tonight and Friday evening in the Clifton school auditorium. Final dress rehearsals were held earlier this week under the direction of Nathan Smith with assistants La Jean Stevenson Mrs George Crockett Kandis Coburn Christy Morgan and Milford Murdock.
A grass fire carried by the wind burned a three tier chicken coop at the Mar lowe Woodward farm in Franklin Wednesday afternoon. The coop housed 700 to 1000 hens but all chicks were saved. Firemen fought the blaze for two and a half hours, with damage estimated between 2000 and 3000 dollars.
Preston Chamber of Commerce representatives A N Wendell Orson Baugh and Rulon Dunn attended a Lava Hot Springs meeting to gauge interest in forming an area industrial development council. Other towns represented included Soda Springs Grace Bancroft McCammon Pocatello Blackfoot and Arco.
A letter from Idaho state senator J Reid Hoggan from Franklin County protests the governor moving to close the Prescott Employment Security Office amid factional politics. He recounts meetings with county officials and party leaders urging restoration, noting Sutton’s dismissal and county impact.

The Franklin County Flower and Garden Club will hold its first meeting in a garden clinic form at the Franklin County Courthouse at 7 30 P M Monday. Alfred Kern the tuberous begonia expert will discuss indoor planting and seed preparation for outdoor planting later. Mrs Clara Schenk will lead a discussion on planting protecting and staking vegetables to ensure best production. Ray Merrill will cover dormant spraying of shrubs and trees in advance of the growing season. J Neff Boothe will report on the Franklin County beautification committee plans for the 1960 centennial observance. Musical numbers will be provided and refreshments arranged. Invitations have been mailed by secretary Mrs Ethel Larsen to members and others interested in home gardening are invited by president William Weber.
A high ranking church official, Elder John Longden, will address the Oneida stake quarterly conference in Preston with public sessions at 10 am and 2 pm in the stakehouse. He will discuss spiritual and temporal affairs and church growth. meetings follow Saturday evening. The event precedes the worldwide April conference at Temple Square.
Kent Benson was named vice president of the Associated Men Students at BYU in Provo. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Orval Benson of Whitney. The vote also selected leaders for the 5800 male students for the next term.
A. N. Wendell of Utah Power & Light Co announces Varian Clark as commercial consultant for the Preston division. Clark, a 12 year employee, previously residential consultant at American Fork, succeeds Burton C. Martin. He and wife Jackie move to Preston with four children from Lehi where they were active in civic and church groups.
Friday March 27 at 1 30 pm in the Franklin County courtroom Judge John A Carver will preside. The session will hear defaults and law questions and set pre trial or trial dates. Cases listed include Marjorie Waller vs Myrl W Waller Dell W Smith for plaintiff Affleck for defendants in several matters with multiple attorneys.
Four teams were eliminated on opening night as the 12 team city sponsored tournament began. Native Lumber beat Cache Valley Auction 56 to 37 while Richmond defeated Premium Oil 55 to 34. Webb defeated Downey 68 to 35 and West Side topped Arimo 48 to 39. High scorers included Demar Barthlome and Bart Merrill for Native Lumber and Hodges and Porter for Richmond.
Gov Smylie designates A G Condie of Franklin county as commissioner for district five of the Idaho state wheat commission which oversees promotion and market development for Idaho wheat. Also named were Nelson Gabby Strom Smith and Condie with terms ending 1962 1963 1961 1960 and 1964 respectively. Local groups supported Condie while other nominees included Cotant and Baker.
A cancer training school convened March 18 at the American Legion hall. Dr. Leo Le Hawkes led a Q and A on cancer after a film on Air anepes tology. Mrs. Baker, district commander from Montpelier, awarded seven five year honors to cancer workers. Mrs. Harold Carsen spoke on Idaho cancer facilities and services.
