Simmons Resigns as Eastside District Superintendent

W H Simmons announces resignation effective July 1 1959 after serving since 1944 as superintendent. He began here as high school principal in 1935 served on the local board and plans to remain in teaching focusing on guidance or social studies. He praises pupil achievement and district programs across bands choruses debate and other activities.

Sheriff Talbot Chosen by FBI for Special Training

Ray Talbot will depart from Salt Lake City by plane to Washington DC for a 12 week FBI supervised training program. He is Idaho's sole representative chosen for the national school opening March 11 to train local officers who will in turn educate others.

One of World's Top Trumpeters To Play Here

Rafael Mendez, regarded as the world's greatest trumpet virtuoso, is set to perform at Preston High School on Thursday March 12 with an evening show in the gym Friday March 13 at 8 p.m. Arrangements began last September and the Preston band has been practicing to accompany him.

Franklin county jamboree set for March 14 at Preston High

The annual Franklin county fish and game jamboree will be held Saturday March 14 at Preston High School gym. The event runs 7:30 to 10 p m with dancing a carnival and wildlife film to follow. Membership is 1.50 for admission and includes a year in the local fish and game association chaired this year by A L Snowy Stocks. Elections will select new officers for the coming year. Local officers invite all to attend the dinner dancing and games lasting into the evening.

Indians Lose Out In Preston District Tourney

Preston High Indians were eliminated from the district tournament after two losses at Preston last week. Malad defeated Preston 66 46 to end their run, with Ralph Hanson scoring 27 for Preston. Earlier Pocatello beat Montpelier 48 47 in a thriller as Duane Sims led Pocatello with 21 points.

Mark Hart Featured In IDEALS Easter Edition

The IDEALS magazine prints a Mark Hart poem Nothing Lovelier from Preston on its Easter pages. Hart flies Monday night to New York City for an institute with the archdiocese school board, then Chicago for another institute and displays his vocabulary workbooks at both venues during a ten day trip. David W. Davis visits his parents and receives an honorable discharge from the U S Air Force after enlisting in 1955. Hyrum Buttars of Clarkston visits Ralph Davis's home Friday.

West Side High planned musical Moonlight cast named

The annual West Side High School musical Moonlight will be staged March 26 and 27 with Carolyn Griffeth as Kitty and Anna Hildt as Mrs. Ellen Randolph among a large cast. Nathan Smith directs with LaJean Stevenson as student director and Karidis Coburn as dance director. Preston bargain days also announced with 40 50 merchants and no parking meters or sales tax.

Agricultural car tour to highlight dryland cereals in Dayton

The Union Pacific's 12th annual agricultural improvement car tours Dayton tomorrow for Franklin County farmers. Local FFA Youths Seek State Farmer Degree

Stephen Meek and Brent Gamble passed the district sitting committee to qualify for the state farmer degree. If they advance at Boise on March 27 they will join the top two percent of Idaho FFA members. Meek, a former graduate, helps run a purebred Hereford ranch with his father. Gamble, Preston FFA president, was on Idaho’s winning judging team at Waterloo Iowa earning a gold medal.

Coburn Jury Trial Begins Over Fatal Baxter He Was

The negligent homicide trial of Max Coburn opened with jury selection at 2 p m Wednesday. Coburn is charged in the November auto deaths of Hazel and Donald Baxter, with Judge John A Carver presiding as jury is chosen. Prosecution and defense will present their cases thereafter.

Wallace Olsen Former Official Dies After Heart Attack

Wallace Hans Olsen 77 died at home Wednesday from a heart attack. Born March 19, 1884 in Franklin to Hans and Annetta Peter son Olsen, he married Manila Cottle. A longtime church and civic leader, he served in Franklin Mutual presidency, Sunday school, elders quorum, and nine years in the bishopric. He held county commissioner terms, a state Legislature seat, and county school board service. Survivors include wife Manila, two sons Wallace Olsen Jr and Max Olsen, daughter Mrs Harold Bradford, ten grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and siblings Frank Olsen Lucils Doney Rose Hendricks and Rhoda Neeley. Funeral Saturday at 1 pm in Franklin ward chapel. viewing Friday eve and Saturday morning. burial in Franklin cemetery.
