Fire Burns Farm Shed and Straw Near Darwin Rawlings

City fire department guarded a blaze Monday evening at Darwin Rawlings farm. A shed and baled straw burned with undetermined cause. one building damaged beyond repair but nearby houses and other structures were saved. Firefighters made two hydrant trips and used truck supply due to limited outside water.

Dayton poet Mabel Law Atkinson wins in a Midwest contest with The Pipe of Peace and four other poems named among five winners. Her works also place in the Lyrelle contest in California and will appear in Smoke Signals and several year anthologies including Sea to Sea in Song.

TB Mobile Unit Brings Free X Rays to Franklin County

The TB mobile unit arrives in Franklin County and will stay through next week offering free X rays to residents aged 15 and over. It previously operated in Dayton and will visit Preston and Bucey next. Each examination takes about one minute with no clothing removal and no charge.

National Forest personnel received safety awards for injury free service and motor vehicle operation. Regional forester Tae Olsen cited guards such as Murle Markham Brigham City and J B Hann Paris for long, accident free careers. The Preston Cemetery district completed a project with the genealogical society of Utah to microfilm and archive interment records. New books and two indexes were produced, names printed in The Preston Citizen invited for verification, over 100 additions, with microfilm stored in Franklin County courthouse for long term preservation.

Sheriff Warns County Youths About Air Rifle Safety

Sheriff Ray Talbot issued a strict warning to all county youths and parents about vandalism with air rifles and .22s. He cited incidents of boys shooting in posted areas along highways and railroads and on private property, causing injuries to animals. The Weston community announces a large 4th of July style celebration on July 24 led by chairmen Eldon Bing ham and committee members for sports, rodeo, parades, booths, and a patriotic meeting with a Salt Lake City speaker.
