W E Crane Nominated for Franklin County Commissioner

William E. Crane of Mink Creek, long active in local Republican politics, is recommended to Gov. Len B. Jordan to fill the late Isaac M. Evans seat on the Franklin County Board of Commissioners. Crane, a 42 year resident and rancher, would serve until January 1953 unless he seeks election next fall. He has eight children, served in World War II, and previously chaired local GOP and Mink Creek village board.

Preston Baseball Schedule Announced For Utah Idaho League

The Preston team released its June through August calendar of Utah Idaho league games. Home matches include Logan on June 18, Ogden on June 25, Smithfield on July 2, Maladi on July 9, Honeyville on July 16 and Ogden on August 13. Preston will travel to Garland on June 21 and July 30 and to Logan on August 8.

Seaman Kay Wireman Serves Aboard USS Fletcher

Seaman Kay S Wireman, USN, son of Mrs Ethel Wireman of Thatcher, serves aboard the escort destroyer USS Fletcher in Far Eastern waters. Since arriving last November the Fletcher has taken part in shore bombardment and escort duty off the Korean coasts. The ship was struck by enemy counter-battery fire but sustained no damage.

Dayton Iris Wins Prize at Cache Valley Show

Don Bradford, Dayton seminary teacher and iris breeder, won with his entry Sable, a dark purple iris, at the Logan sponsored Cache Valley Iris show where 110 firsts were awarded.

Eldon T Bennett Receives Commission In Air Force Reserve

Eldon T Bennett of 256 East 2nd South Preston joins 53 second lieutenants as a United States Air Force Reserve officer. A Utah State Agricultural College student set to earn a B S in civil engineering, he completed ROTC and served as secretary of Sigma Tau engineering honorary, earning the ASCE award for services.

Preston Considering New Ordinance on Peddlers

Preston Idaho officials study a proposed city ordinance to restrict solicitors hawkers and itinerant vendors within the city limits. The measure slated for third reading and a July passage would declare unsolicited visits to private homes a nuisance and punishable as a misdemeanor with fines up to 100 dollars plus costs.

Burglars Hit Franklin County Farms and Businesses

Last week Franklin county farms and firms were burglarized. George Egbert's granary was entered Friday night with grain, 30 gallons of gasoline, tools and antifreeze stolen. The Diamond Stud pool room was entered Sunday night, the juke box opened and about $10 taken along with cigarettes cigars seven billfolds and two cartons of peanuts. Entry was via a pried back window. Sheriff E L Hansen and Deputy Ray Fackrell investigated.

Increase in Rates Asked by Utah Power

Utah Power and Light Co. seeks approval from the Idaho Public Utilities Commission for new electric service rate schedules and regulations. A hearing is set for Tuesday July 22 at 10 a.m. in the police court room at Lewis Street and Second Ave South in Pocatello.

County weed tour set for June 20 in Franklin County

Franklin County plans a noxious weed tour Friday June 20 starting at 1 30 p m from the courthouse. Dean Smith chair of the county Farm Bureau weed committee says the tour, with extension service cooperation, will inspect sprayed winter wheat fields and discuss wild carrot control and chemical cultural methods. Howard Boylarke of Boise will report on Meredian station experiments.

New Safeway Manager Moves Family Here

John Campbell, new manager of the Preston Safeway store, moved his family from Salt Lake City to 271 East Second North. The Campbells include Mrs Campbell a son and a daughter and Joyce Whitesides of Burley is Mrs Campbell prior to the move.

Cancer Society Drives County to Reach Quota in Drive

Franklin County Cancer Society reports its annual drive reached the quota with total contributions of 1696 dollars and 65 cents. County commander Mrs. Russell Crockett praised cooperation from community captains and workers and thanked all contributors. Preston business district led with 406 dollars 45 cents, followed by Preston first ward with 166 dollars 25 cents under drive captain Mrs. Dan Swainston.

Opening Event of 1952 Idaho Pioneer Day in Franklin

Tomorrow night opens Franklin's 1952 Idaho Pioneer Day celebration with a wrestling card at the Franklin gymnasium at 8 p.m. The Monte Young carnival will operate both days as the main festival activities begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, featuring a parade at 2 p.m. and a baseball game Preston vs Garland at 2:30 p.m. A public meeting in the ward chapel will include musical numbers readings and two addresses by LDS Church officials Stephen L. Richards and Gov Len B Jordan. The Saturday finale is a grandstand stage revue at 8:30 p.m. headlined by John Rock and company Penny Parker and other acts.

Oneida Stake Softball Opens Season Oneida Area

Oneida stake softball starts tonight and runs to July 24 with junior teams on Thursday and senior teams on Friday. Teams include Preston third ward Preston fourth Preston seventh Dayton Clifton Mink Creek Winder Riverdale Glencoe Banida. Games begin at 7 8 and 9 p.m. Top four teams vie for stake championship on August 1.

Mendenhall Not Seeking Re election Moves to Pocatello

Vernon Mendenhall Franklin county state representative two terms told the Republican central committee he will not run again next fall. He plans to move to Pocatello to help his son Don at the Rialto theatre. He is leaving Thatcher after 21 years, turning over his store and the Utah Oil bulk plant to Claude and Richard E. Garbett, who recently began operating the business. Garbett has retail experience with J C Penney and Skaggs stores.

New Pool Opens in Franklin County Hot Springs

A renovated concrete pool in Franklin County opens to the public. The pool reaches eight feet at its deep end and forty inches at the shallow end. Devon H and M D Kershaw opened the site located four miles past Oneida Station dam or two and a half miles south of the Cleveland Bridge.

Vernon Hinckley and Darrell Larsen Commissioned at Idaho

Vernon Hinckley and Darrell Larsen of Preston received commissions as second lieutenants at the University of Idaho commencement. Hinckley earned a U.S. Army Reserve commission while Larsen joined the U.S. Air Force Reserve.

Parade Train Invades Franklin Parade Saturday

The pint sized Union Pacific parade train returns for its 30th season at Franklin this Saturday at 2 p.m. It has long delighted crowds on western celebrations traveling over a quarter million miles. The miniature locomotive runs off a tractor power unit and includes engine tender stock car box car coal car tank car and caboose.
