Preston ice cream retailers announce higher retail prices due to rising wholesale costs. Dealers say several cost jumps in recent months have left some products sold at a loss. The new prices take effect Sunday.
Fire destroyed the Geisler Repair shop and a garage on Preston’s eastern edge Monday night. Ray Geisler and sons estimated losses at 25 000 to 30 000 for the shop and equipment. total week losses approach 35 000. Building insured. Firefighters lacked water during containment. An auto and a Geisler truck were also lost.
The war department announced that T/Sgt Roy G Merrill was killed on May 17 in Okinawa by a shot through the right temple near his wrecked jeep. Parents were notified this week. detailed particulars have not yet been received.
Mink Creek Club announces a July celebration featuring a patriotic program parade horse show pulling matches and a rodeo. Committees led by Faye Wilde Lynn Nelson Willis Oliverson Delbert Keller Eugene Oliverson Douglas Nelson Dwight Wilde Nathaniel Keller and Ross Jergeson organize events with prizes and concessions at the LDS chapel 11 am.
The Franklin Idaho day event will be short some familiar faces as older pioneers have died since last year. Among the deceased are Sarah W Bennett Eliza D Lowe Joseph Broadbent William Billy White head Rachel Woodward David Nash Myron Cornish George Robinson Charlotte Atkinson Kate Dunkley Poole and William Hurd. The only living original pioneer is Mrs Sarah D Hatch who may attend depending on her health.
Opening Monday evening the Franklin County softball league schedules a 7 30 start at the Local ball park Lions collide with Hansen Godfrey at 7 30 Carpenters vs Jaycees at 8 30 and Rotary v Elks at 9 30 Games run Mondays and Thursdays all summer with Uppers vs Franklin marked for next Thursday at 7 30.
C W Christensen and his widow Violet Cornish Christensen, residents of Grace, died within a week of each other. C W Christensen passed May 22 after a lingering illness. services were held at Grace chapel and burial followed at Downey cemetery. Mrs Christensen suffered a paralytic stroke the day before her husband’s funeral and died the following Sunday.
A polio emergency volunteers unit will hold two day classes here on June 9 and 10 under Mrs Rita Bowles and Mrs Mada Eline. A nurse and physical therapist will teach hot pack treatments to small groups and clinics for polio patients or those with symptoms will run at Lewiston Pocatello and Idaho Falls by June 15.
Francis Rasmussen Weston and Grant Radford Preston join 47 other men as pledges of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity at the University of Idaho. The Epsilon Gamma chapter, established in 1927 and disbanded in 1941, awaits a house this summer with initiation guided by the Washington State college chapter.
W McCune and Keith Christensen of McCune Motor Co. traveled by special train from Salt Lake City to San Francisco for the Ford dealers convention attended by about 1200 western state dealers. They previewed the 1949 Ford models noting lower height about five feet, increased interior and trunk space, and new features. The group dressed in cowboy attire during travel and sessions, with plans to display the model mid month.
Four students from Preston among 13637 in BYU's commencement exercises on June 1. Beula Bell Hinckley earned A B in sociology with English minor. Earl Baird Kofoed earned AB with English major and French minor. Ella Hull earned B S in elementary education with English minor. Glen Harold Olson earned B S in physical education with sociology minor.
The 60th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Choules will be marked with an open house at their Fairview home on Sunday from 2 to 7 PM. The couple married on June 2, 1888 in Fairview and have long lived as early settlers and farmers. Charles Choules, born October 8, 1861 in Birrage England, is a high priest in the LDS church. Mary Choules, born March 11, 1866 in Salt Lake City, has served in the primary presidency and relief society for decades. They have 10 children, 33 grandchildren, and 171 great grandchildren. A reception and call-ins for friends and relatives are invited.
Milo Hobbs, Ray Merrill and William A. Beckstead announce Milo’s Drive-In market and City Coal and Feed Co at State Street and Second South. The 66 by 75 foot block building houses a 75 by 30 foot grocery and locker section with a modern cold storage basement. Hobbs will manage the market. Merrill and Beckstead run the coal feed and seed business. The lockers feature new steel units and a rear chute system for meat to travel to a basement pre cool area before aging and optional waxing, with individual drawers for customers.
A Moscow Idaho engineering student Irel S McQueen was falsely linked to mortician studies in Cincinnati. He is a senior in engineering at the University of Idaho and newly appointed assistant in the materials testing lab. he served in the Air Force, not the quartermaster corps graves registration, as claimed.
Funeral rites for Frank T. Merrill 68 held in the fourth ward chapel with Bishop Asael Bell recounting his life. Merrill was active in church organizations and civic work, and a longtime member of the Oreida stake high council and priest quorum. The Preston Melodians led the open hymn Oh My Father.
Idaho state police, the sheriff and city police warn car horn and whistle noise from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m. is a public nuisance. Persistent offenders may face action as authorities coordinate to curb disturbing sounds.
Vocal and choir rehearsals begin June 7 at Preston High School under music director Lyle Shipley for the June 12 and 13 Oneida stake conference. Sessions meet in the school music room on Mondays with group meet at 1 p.m. and choral practice at 8 p.m. Eligible participants include high school students and adults interested in vocal work during summer.
Superintendent Hart reports a special school election will be held soon to establish two class Aeyschog districts in Bannock and Franklin counties. An earlier delay occurred when Bannock county included parts of Franklin in west Bannock descriptions for the class A district.
Willis Corbridge was elected president of the Franklin Lions club at last week’s officers’ meeting. Others named were Lyman Jensen as secretary Victor Dunkley as tail twister and Marvin Gregerson as lion tamer. A swimming party followed the supper at Downey. Delegates to the Lions convention at Sun Valley were Leonard Butterworth and Gordon Marshall.
Week of showers improves moisture in Franklin county as farmers report better soil, spurred growth, and hope for more rain. Light rain Tuesday, heavier Wednesday, with total weekly precipitation near half an inch. U S department of agriculture notes good progress in southern and eastern Idaho with dry peas up and sugar beets growing, hay crops strong, range and pasture favorable, and milk production rising.
Mayor Ernest Eberhard announced a public meeting at 8 oclock in the Second Ward Church to discuss the proposed sewer district costs and connections. Residents of the first second and sixth wards are urged to attend as city officials explain the project and its financial impact. A Franklin County Hog Breeders association report notes 114 hogs sold for 24.30 per cwt to Cudahy Packing Co, totaling 6074.50 for 27020 lbs liveweight.
Pete Jorgensen of Preston won the 50 meter match at Idaho state's seventh annual small bore gun tournament in Boise held last Sunday and Monday. He scored 399 25x to beat Lee A Swem of Portland Oregon who had 399 21x. Jorgensen’s win earns him the grand aggregate high marksman honor and a medal to be engraved for one year.
