A Salt Lake City newspaperman says Preston is in for a whale of a good rodeo this year after seeing Richter rodeo and many past events. He asserts the show will deliver strong crowds and excitement for fans.
Steve G Hopkins enlists in the Navy for three years and is stationed in San Diego. A Salt Lake promoter, Richter, brings a large rodeo show to Nephi with 100 bucking horses, 25 Brahmas, 30 calves, and 50 colored horses. Merlin Whittle notes the wild, fast rodeo with new cutting-horse contest and acts including Bernice Taylor and Fay Blessing.
In a low turnout special vote, Preston residents authorize 59 000 in bonds for sewer water works fire equipment and street improvements. Districts split yes on sewer water and street projects with no major organized opposition. Mayor Eberhard notes limited funds and schedules to avoid delaying current projects.
The Preston high band and majorettes rehearse for a three day rodeo show led by conductor Lynn J. Bright. A 7 p.m. Monday practice includes formation polishing with a special dime. They performed at Grace July 24 for the MIA celebration in a white and blue uniform.
Rudolph B de Packh a 39 year old Salt Lake City bank examiner was captured hours after robbing the Grace First National Bank. He pleaded guilty earlier and appeared before Judge Chase A Clark in Boise to receive a six year federal prison term.
After 24 years of service Howard Hall is released as bishop of the Second Ward and parley Shaffer succeeds him as bishop. Archies Gill and LeRoy Hansen are replaced by Arlan Sharp and Royal Miles. Eugene Merrill is succeeded by George Carter and Dale Allred remains as assistant clerk.
Local event headlines a western style pre rodeo dance at Brookside next week. Sponsorry partners include the Brookside Legion post and rodeo committee. Prizes award the most typical outfit. attendees urged to dress in western attire for the competition.
Vern LaMar Oliverson 23 of Salt Lake City and Gale Clifford 26 of Logan died Sunday at 3 55 pm in an unauthorized acrobatics flight at Salt Lake airport. Officials say the single engine trainer crashed from 200 to 300 feet onto the runway during the air show.
The Preston Lions Club held a Western themed dinner and session to discuss the upcoming 48th night rodeo. Merlin Whittle explained the rodeo history while Mrs. Ralph Davis and her sons performed western songs. William Evans of Salt Lake City attended as a special guest and the attendance committee coordinated the event. Proceeds from concession Lon will be donated to the blind committee.
Preston police outline curb parking limits and parade path for the August 5 rodeo night parade. Traffic on First West closed 5:30 PM to after the event. Parade forms at First West Oneida and proceeds east to Second East then south to Second South, west to State, north to Second North and back to rodeo grounds.
1st Sgt. William H. Coltrin of Franklin earned the Bronze Star for exemplary conduct in ground combat near Huftgan forest Germany in October 1944. He also holds the Silver Star, Purple Heart with two clusters, and other decorations. serving since 1940, he is with the 581st supply squadron at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii. His wife Ida Hawkley noted the honor in a Honolulu paper.
Franklin county hog raisers reported a top 29.20 per hundredweight paid by Fred Hill and Sons of Burley for 79 head shipped to South San Francisco for slaughter. Next sale set for August 4 with entries due by August 31 at the county agent's office. Orion Jensen, Ethel Cole and Gerald Cole left for a Canada vacation this week.
Weston held Pioneer Day with hundreds attending the morning program at the opera house. Queen Darlene and attendants were chosen as part of the celebration sponsored by the Mutual Improvement Association. The day featured a parade, baseball game Weston vs Franklin, horse-pulling contests, stunts, a dance, and a noon speech by Dr. E G Peterson.
Fairview local hearing addressed farm bureau aims under President Don Clegg of the Idaho Farm Bureau. Discussion covered farmers running their own business, protecting farming as a vital unit, soil depletion concerns, and future hope amid economic challenges. Melvin Smith led the proceedings with Zelda Hinckley guiding women’s group activities. a potluck ended the evening.
Oneida stake fathers and sons schedule a two day trip to Willow Flat with planned start on August 10. The event, sponsored by the church MIA, was postponed from June due to heavy rains and now aims for good weather on August 10 and 11. Camp at 7 p.m. Tuesday with a campfire at 8:30 and early 6:30 a.m bugle call next day.
Report from a district Rotary conference in Salt Lake details a humorous incident after a meeting at Randall's cafe. Officials Dean Jensen and deputies allegedly escorted several rotarians to the cafe front in mock custody, while others fled out back to avoid arrest as discussion turned to rodeo shirts and wardrobe concerns.
Frances Coe Larson widow of A B Larson died at her son Gaylord Larson’s home in East Oneida Preston. Born January 23 1874 in Tarkio Missouri she moved to Salt Lake City at 21 and married Andrew W Larson later living in Provo Payson Preston and Salt Lake City. Surviving are two daughters a son in Birmingham Michigan another son Howard Larson of San Francisco and Mrs Florence Dunn of Fort Collins plus seven grandchildren and a brother Fred Coe of Portland. Webb Hendricks Mortuary directed the Preston funeral services with plans in Salt Lake City tomorrow.
Officials and directors of the Preston Whitney Irrigation Co celebrate the completion of their No 2 reservoir two miles east of Preston. Financed by local capital at about 100000 dollars the dam will feed a seven mile canal from Cub river to supply 8000 acres on Bear river east side in Franklin county. The No 1 dam at Glendale cost about 240000 and was completed in 1930.
Franklin County junior league baseball final tilts set for Tuesday night with Preston IT facing Fairview at 5 p.m. Preston I meets Mink Creek at 7 p.m. and 3 West Side plays Franklin at 9 p.m. at the league venue.
Sam Hansen of Jerome spent a week visiting friends and relatives in the area, sharing time with local residents and reconnecting with family.
