Preston hosts three night rodeo and horse show

Dan Swainston leads a large parade and equestrian event opening Thursday Aug 5 for three nights of rodeo and horse show entertainments. Eight riding organizations have entered with prizes totaling 238 dollars for top placers.

Funeral services for Harold E. Benson 36 son of Mrs Lillie Benson Preston were arranged here after his death Tuesday in an airplane crash near Park City Utah He served as a navy chief petty officer at Midway Pearl Harbor and Treasure Island and later worked at the weather bureau in Salt Lake City He is survived by his wife Shirley a four month old daughter Linda his mother a twin sister and four sisters with relatives in Preston Riverdale Salt Lake City Pocatello Rexburg and nearby towns

T/Sgt Roy Merrill to be buried Sunday in Swan Lake

T/Sgt Roy G Merrill 27 of Swan Lake, killed two months ago on Okinawa, will be buried with military honors after Sunday services at the Swan Lake LDS chapel at 2 pm. His body arrived home this morning escorted by T/Sgt John Balko from San Francisco to Preston. Sergeant Merrill was found continued on page 7.

Citizen shifts five candidates in new primary campaign

The Citizen reports changes in Franklin county politics affecting five candidates. Chesney B Sorenson is identified as a Democratic sheriff candidate while several precinct committeemen listed as Democrats are corrected to Republicans. The paper retracts earlier mislabels and notes party switches and retirements.

Wheat Harvest Set to Begin in Franklin County

Harvest to start next week as elevators report a promising crop. Farmers noted weeks of heat and dryness could have harmed yields, but sturdy wintering and recent rain improved topsoil moisture. A grower estimates dryland wheat may average 60 bushels per acre, up from a prior bet of 50.

Mrs Ursula Pack Smith Dies at Burgi Home

Mrs Ursula Vilaté Pack Smith aged 89 died at the Burgi residence 147 N First W about 1 a.m. She had been in fragile health a long time. Born August 22, 1858 in Salt Lake City she was daughter of John Pack and Ruth Mosher Pack. She grew up in Utah and Idaho and later moved to Preston with her husband Robert Smith in 1881. The Smiths had 10 children, five surviving Parley L. and others listed.

Shirley Whitehead Reigns as Queen of Pocatello Rodeo

Shirley Whitehead won the Pocatello rodeo queen title amid a three day Western Days celebration. Miss LaRue Jacobs and Miss Treva Hiatt, both of Pocatello, served as queens alongside her. The trio attended a Salt Lake City luncheon and led the parade while riding in the rodeo events.

Pioneer celebration weekend plans announced for Weston

Preston business and Weston residents prepare for Pioneer Day events starting at 9 30 A M with a parade. G Peterson former USAC president will speak at 1 P M in Weston. Activities include baseball, horse pulling, pony judging, stunts, two dances, chicken scramble and a fireworks display with boxing cards at 8 P M Saturday night.

Foss Furniture Moves Into New Preston Building

Foss Furniture stock has relocated to a new reinforced concrete and steel building at East Oneida, while renovation begins in the old site west of it. The 120 by 45 foot structure features nine foot display windows across the front and will receive cast stone facade to resemble marble. Interior upgrades include a new floor and ceiling and a relocated rear stair, with the old tin awning removed.

Services Held Saturday For Ivan Geary Prominent County Man

Services were conducted Saturday for Ivan Geary at 2 30 p m in the Franklin ward chapel. Bishop W P Waddoups officiated with R H Rich delivering the prayer. Preston post 34 of the American Legion posted colors, and the Franklin choir performed Though Deepening Trails under Mrs Vella Woodward with organist Mrs Lorena Benson. The service honored the 53 year old county figure who served in World War I.

Petterborg Memorial Service Set For Tuesday

Memorial for Lieut. John Petterborg U S Marine killed July 7 in a Hawaiian crash will be held Tuesday at 8 30 p m in the fourth ward meeting house. A program by Bishop Rulon Keller and local residents will honor the Franklin County officer who served in World War II and remained in the service rising to captain before his death.

Beutler Family Hurt In Burley Area Car Crash

Mrs Walter Beutler of Dayton remains hospitalized with a broken back after a collision Saturday near Burley at the Oakley and Albion highways. Also injured were Sheldon Beutler and Blanche Beutler who were treated for cuts and bruises.

Vocalists Invited to Summer Practice at Franklin High

Lyle Shipley announces a summer vocal program at Franklin High School. A meeting is set for Monday evening July 26 in the high school auditorium due to academy repairs. New and graduate students are urged to join small groups at 7 pm and the choir at 8 pm for the summer course through each Monday night.
