Three County Schools to Be Closed by Eastside Board

Eastside School District 201 votes four to one to close Banida Riverdale and Winder elementary schools for 1959-60. About 93 students and five teachers move to Preston. voters can petition to reopen by Aug. 3 with a 66 2 3 percent majority. Edgley cites economy and better opportunities.

Five Stakes Combine Talent For Roadshow at Preston High

District B roadshow brings together Oneida Mink Creek Preston third ward Franklin Whitney ward Downey ward Portneuf Ward Trenton ward and Benson stakeholders in a Saturday 8 pm event at Preston High School auditorium. Idaho Girls to Represent State at Girls Nation in Washington

Julie Hammond of Preston Idaho and Dane Fuehr of Wallace depart by train for Washington to attend Girls Nation. They will tour Chicago en route and meet President Eisenhower at a White House reception. The trip runs through July 31 with two Idaho delegates among 100 girls at the event.

Preston Unit Club Memberships Open for Golf Project

Preston Golf and Country Club invites members as construction planning proceeds. Dr. Leo Hawkes, president, announces Paul Merrill named work chairman to organize volunteers and equipment. Sergeant Hansen Transferred to Germany from Idaho State College

Gene A. Hansen ISC Sergeant and supply sergeant for the military science department at Idaho State College since 1953 receives Army orders transferring him to two units near Frankfort Germany. A 11 year Army veteran he came to JISC after Korea service and will report to Fort Dix New Jersey August 21 for transport to Europe his wife and three children will remain in Preston until arrangements can be made.

Taylor Nelson Dies Friday In Riverdale

Franklin county resident Taylor Nelson died Friday afternoon at his Riverdale home after a long illness. Aged 78, he was born December 23, 1878, in Franklin. Nelson served missions in the southern states and held church leadership roles in Riverdale and Oneida areas. He married Susie Hawkes, then later Della Packer. Survivors include his widow and eight of nine children with several grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday at the stakehouse with burial in Riverdale Cemetery.

Preston gears up for its 24th famous Night Rodeo starting Thursday at 6 p.m. with parades and three nightly rodeo performances at 8. Franklin County Fair Opens Premium Book Distribution

Franklin County fair week is set for August 20 to 22 with the 1959 premium book now available at the county agent's office. The booklet features a county history and a portrait of Dr. Neen Choules plus notes from last year’s exhibitors and superintendents. County Agent Daniel Roberts urges 4-H and exhibitors to review the premium lists by mail or in person to plan upcoming displays.

George A Crockett Dies After Rites Held Wednesday

George A. Crockett 66 died after lines and rites held Wednesday. Born May 5 1893 in Logan to George Elmer and Isabel Elizabeth Adams Crockett. He married Christine Nyman Olsen April 7 1919 in Preston. A World War I veteran and longtime Cub River Irrigation director, he farmed near Whitney until 1951 retired to Preston. Survived by a son and daughter Zenna Beth and George LaMoyne of Preston, three grandchildren, six siblings. Funeral at Franklin stakehouse Wednesday at 1 pm. Burial in Whitney Cemetery.
