Talent Find and Talk Meets Across Franklin County

Community Farm Bureau talent find and talk meet events span Franklin county with age groups from under six to 16 for youth contestants. Senior talent fund ages 17 to 30 will perform August 22 in the third ward chapel and may appear on a Montpelier TV show August 29. County winners advance to division meets and a Miss Franklin County pageant selects a queen for 1959. Local organizers include Mrs. Von Noyes and others. contest dates run early August through mid August at multiple ward chapels and churches.

University of New Mexico Hosts 2000 Summer School Students

Russo W. Fryer of Preston enrolls in summer school at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. The program includes classes workshops and clinics with many teachers returning for in service training. Fryer, a mathematics graduate student, is married with three children.

Four-H Fun Day Set for Aug. 7 At Willow Flat

The third annual 4-H family fun day is planned for Willow Flat on Friday July 17 starting at 7 30 a m Mrs Margaret Woodward and Mrs Gladys LeFevre Franklin co chairmen announce breakfast from 7 30 to 10 a m with juice hot cakes bacon and eggs or sausage and eggs and hot chocolate for 35 cents A series of hikes and games follow lunch at 1 p m with hamburgers milk soda and ice cream A 3 30 p m program features 4 H club members and a closing with more hamburgers ice cream and watermelon County members Ellen Roberts Owen Gibson Mary Bergquist Lucretia Maughan and Daniel Roberts are listed as helpers

School Board Calls Election On Discontinuing Rural Units

Banida Riverdale and Winder hold a village school election to decide whether to discontinue attendance units. Voters will choose aye to discontinue or nay to keep open. The board cites improved education and possible 15000 savings, with no new Preston building. turnout urged.

Miss Julie Hammond Joins Girls Nation Delegates

Preston student Miss Julie Hammond arrives in Washington D C with nine and four other youth leaders to participate in Girls Nation activities. She represents Idaho and joins delegates from 46 states the District of Columbia and the Panama Canal Zone for a six day citizenship program at American University.

Idaho State School Lunch Workshop Praises Local Instructors

Mrs. Don Elwell and Mrs. Nelile Stenberg taught baking classes at Idaho Falls Twin Falls Nampa and Lewiston as part of the state school lunch program workshop. The Idaho state lunch department commended their efforts and noted Preston’s lunch program as a model for the state.

Preston Night Rodeo Preparations Highlight Boise Preliminaries

Preparations for the 1858 Preston Night Rodeo are set for 8 p.m. tonight at the Preston rodeo arena with ticket sales strong at the First Security Bank. A parade begins at 6 p.m. featuring local organizations, school bands, and visiting riding clubs, followed by weekend parades and rodeo acts including Rex Allen and horse Koko.

Social Security to Increase Benefits This Year

A Social Security official announces higher benefits for future retirees due to raising the yearly earnings tax credit from 4200 to 4800. The change, effective this year, increases the base used to calculate benefits for workers and their families. A representative will be at the Preston courthouse August 11 from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
