A reconstructed Pioneer Day program announces a wrestling card highlighted by top heavyweight grapplers. The event runs Wednesday evening July 23 to mark Weston’s annual celebration with a full pioneer day program and grand entrance.

Weston leaders announce Panter to fight Flake on next Wednesday

The Citizen reports Garth Panter of Dayton will meet Benny Flake of Salt Lake City in a 10-round middleweight bout on wrestling card next Wednesday. Panter is ranked eighth among world middleweights today and Flake is known as a fast hard punching contender.

Farm Fire Destroys Hay and Straw Bales at Tingey Farm

Sparks from an incinerator ignited a blaze at Maurice Tingey’s Weston farm on Wednesday at 12 30 PM burning 1000 bales of hay and 500 bales of straw and threatening the house garage and barn. Preston fire department and volunteers fought the fire until 7 PM. Damage estimated at 1000 dollars.

Young Air Force Colonel Home Visit After Overseas Duty

Young Air Force Colonel Fisher returns from 33 months overseas in Japan to visit Franklin County with wife Eleanor and their three children. He flew B 11s with the Eighth Air Force during the war and now holds a permanent lieutenant colonel’s commission with a full colonel temporary rank at 35. They plan to fly Aug 9 to Orlando to visit Eleanor’s parents and the couple’s youngest child, born in Japan.

John Deere Agency to Show New Tractor Models

Preston Implement Co and local John Deere agency plan a showing this Saturday of new heavy duty two and three plow tractor models. Arnold Sant and TM Bergquist say the models feature engineering advances and improved performance. Free coffee and doughnuts will be served to farming families visiting the event.

Harris Seaman William G Harris Returns to San Diego Aboard LST 742

William G Harris a Seaman First Class in the US Navy and son of M Harris of Preston returned to San Diego aboard the USS LST 742 on July 11. The tank landing ship has served in the Far East for ten months aiding UN forces, refugee lifts, prisoner movements, and amphibious tech training. This marked a second Far East tour since recommissioning in August 1950 at Yokosuka Japan. Continued on page 5.

Preston Nuffer obituary honored for service and family ties

Charles August Nuffer, 81, of Preston died Thursday morning after illness. Born June 18, 1891 in Nueffen Germany, he came to the United States at nine, lived in Providence then Mapleton, then settled in Preston 42 years ago. An active LDS church worker, he served a mission 1910 to 1912, chaired genealogical work, and helped build Preston landmarks. Survived by nine children and 30 grandchildren. funeral Monday at 2 p.m. in Franklin Tabernacle with burial in Preston Cemetery. Burial by Richards and Son Mortuary.

Boy Falls in Bathtub Nearly Drowns at Home

Garth Atkinson eight son of Mr and Mrs Von Atkinson of Treasureton narrowly escaped drowning in a bathtub accident. He slipped struck his head and lay unconscious until his mother found him and applied artificial respiration. A lump on the head was the main after effect.

Rasmussen Files for Caribou County Prosecuting Attorney

Francis Rasmussen of Weston filed Wednesday for the Republican ticket as Caribou County prosecuting attorney. Franklin County Farm Bureau Day Promises Family Fun

The Franklin County Farm Bureau hosts a community farm day on July 28 at Minkret Creek ball park led by Frank Gilbert president.
