A reconstructed Pioneer Day program announces a wrestling card highlighted by top heavyweight grapplers. The event runs Wednesday evening July 23 to mark Weston’s annual celebration with a full pioneer day program and grand entrance.
The Citizen reports Garth Panter of Dayton will meet Benny Flake of Salt Lake City in a 10-round middleweight bout on wrestling card next Wednesday. Panter is ranked eighth among world middleweights today and Flake is known as a fast hard punching contender.
Be da Pioneer er er hosts a July 24 evening wrestling card at West Side High School gymnasium. Main event features Bill Melby vs Mike Nazarian two falls with one hour limit. semi final has Buzz Jones vs Ray Mername two falls with 45 minutes. The Weston LDS ward sponsors the event as part of a 30 year Pioneer Day celebration with new chapel dedication planned Aug 17.
Sparks from an incinerator ignited a blaze at Maurice Tingey’s Weston farm on Wednesday at 12 30 PM burning 1000 bales of hay and 500 bales of straw and threatening the house garage and barn. Preston fire department and volunteers fought the fire until 7 PM. Damage estimated at 1000 dollars.
Young Air Force Colonel Fisher returns from 33 months overseas in Japan to visit Franklin County with wife Eleanor and their three children. He flew B 11s with the Eighth Air Force during the war and now holds a permanent lieutenant colonel’s commission with a full colonel temporary rank at 35. They plan to fly Aug 9 to Orlando to visit Eleanor’s parents and the couple’s youngest child, born in Japan.
Preston Implement Co and local John Deere agency plan a showing this Saturday of new heavy duty two and three plow tractor models. Arnold Sant and TM Bergquist say the models feature engineering advances and improved performance. Free coffee and doughnuts will be served to farming families visiting the event.
Three parades scheduled for Rodeo Nights with July 315 as the entry window. Six prizes will be awarded. judging follows the first parade under theme workmanship and originality. Sheritt Lee Hansen chairs the parade committee. Preston Jaycees assist in planning and preparation.
William G Harris a Seaman First Class in the US Navy and son of M Harris of Preston returned to San Diego aboard the USS LST 742 on July 11. The tank landing ship has served in the Far East for ten months aiding UN forces, refugee lifts, prisoner movements, and amphibious tech training. This marked a second Far East tour since recommissioning in August 1950 at Yokosuka Japan. Continued on page 5.
Local Preston Boots and Saddle club hosts the 1952 Presto night rodeo queen selection Saturday evening. Out of town judges will pick the queen based on poise personality and contestant ability with audience prizes including a saddle boots and western hat shown at Block's store. Contestants include ReNae Porter Joyce Martin Loretta Byington Mary Belle Roberts Lois Meyers Sandra Beckstead Joy Taylor Shirley Moser Melba Naef Marjorie Weaver Barb Rallison Whitney Fae Swainston and Shirley Callahan.
Charles August Nuffer, 81, of Preston died Thursday morning after illness. Born June 18, 1891 in Nueffen Germany, he came to the United States at nine, lived in Providence then Mapleton, then settled in Preston 42 years ago. An active LDS church worker, he served a mission 1910 to 1912, chaired genealogical work, and helped build Preston landmarks. Survived by nine children and 30 grandchildren. funeral Monday at 2 p.m. in Franklin Tabernacle with burial in Preston Cemetery. Burial by Richards and Son Mortuary.
Riverdale leaders announce a planned Pioneer Celebration featuring a daylong program, prizes for winners, a baseball game in the afternoon, and refreshment stands. The event will conclude Thursday evening with a dance at the Riverdale chapel.
A county wide color slides exhibition is planned for August 15 at Preston High School auditorium at 8 p.m. The event, sponsored by the Preston Faculty Photography Club, mirrors Salt Lake City’s format with judged slides from locals. William Craner and Reed Brenchley invite participation and ideas.
Garth Atkinson eight son of Mr and Mrs Von Atkinson of Treasureton narrowly escaped drowning in a bathtub accident. He slipped struck his head and lay unconscious until his mother found him and applied artificial respiration. A lump on the head was the main after effect.
Francis Rasmussen of Weston filed Wednesday for the Republican ticket as Caribou County prosecuting attorney. He holds a law degree from the University of Idaho and a BA in political science from the same university, and plans to establish a law office in Song Springs with his wife Norma Tasso Rasmussen and their son.
Glen Manning resumes control of the Manning Plumbing Co in Preston after a year with D E Fairless Idaho Falls heating and plumbing contractor. Manning is highly recommended by Fairless for his plumbing and heating work.
The Franklin County Farm Bureau hosts a community farm day on July 28 at Minkret Creek ball park led by Frank Gilbert president. The event runs from 10 a.m. with a baseball game and a prizes program at 11 a.m. $100 in prizes, band performances by West Side highs school band, and a noon luncheon with hot dogs and pop. A children oriented program includes sports and prizes, concluding with a countywide softball game between north and south teams. Special committees coordinate refreshments and events.

Franklin county district scouters held an annual meeting to hear nominating committee reports and elect officers for 1953. Reports covered district progress toward 1951-52 goals, summer camping plans, a successful camporee, and advancement in units with many boys earning ranks and merit badges.
