Howard R. Smith Dies After Fall at Mine
Howard R. Smith 57 died after a 15 foot fall at the open pit calcite mine near Treasureton. He was brought to Preston unconscious, then to Salt Lake City for a brain operation but did not survive. Funeral services were held at Franklin stake house. He was born January 2, 1895 in Cleveland and had lived in Cleveland, Arco, and Ogden. He married Hor tense Hynsaker in 1920, who died in 1948, then married Vivian Fowler in 1949.

Weston Plans for Pioneer Day Celebration in Weston

Preston High Grad Joins Submarine Crew
David E. McClun, fireman apprentice in the US Navy, is reported aboard submarine USS Segundo in the engineering department. A Preston native, he graduated from Preston High School in 1949, joined the Navy in October 1951, trained at San Diego, and completed the electric ian's mate school. The Segundo operates out of San Diego as a modern submarine.

Red Cross Blood for Freedom Train Donates 194 Pints
The Red Cross Blood for Freedom train collected 194 pints of blood from donors Monday and Tuesday local leader R. S. Fulton reported. About 232 people came to donate, 38 were turned down by nurses, an excellent result since capacity was limited to about 120 per day. Fulton thanked volunteers and donors for the success.

Hogs Set Top Price Amid Franklin County Pool Sale
