City Adopts Appropriations and Levy Ordinances 333 334

Preston city officials publish Ordinances 333 and 334 for the year May 1 1953 to April 30 1954. Ordinance 333 imposes a 0.042 tax rate with allocations to General fund Street lights Library Bond and interest Sewer district No 4. Ordinance 334 lists annual fund appropriations totaling 143 464 60 with department earmarks and a note that prior year receipts were 154 259 60.

Coaches and Gri diron club plan three all star games between East and West teams from Idaho high schools. Games set Aug 20 in Pocatello, Aug 21 in Idaho Falls, and Aug 22 in Jerome with Bengal Gridiron club sponsorship and halftime attractions. East coach Francis Clark, West coach Cris Leston. East squad includes East erbrook and Buckley among others. West squad features Gillispie Kinzer and Wicks plus others.

Train Stone Throwing Injures Scouts En Route to Jamboree

A special Weston train carrying scouts to the California national jamboree was hit by rocks early Tuesday around 4 30 am. Two cars had windows broken with minor cuts and bruises reported among the scouts. Railroad investigators are examining the incident.

Plane Crash Victim Was to Speak Here

A DC-6B Trans Ocean Airlines crash in the Pacific Saturday night killed 58. William S. Epps, 31, of Ogden, was slated to speak at a Preston church service, and he and his wife had planned to attend a USAC summer session they finished in 1951. No survivors were reported.

City Park Water Not for Drinking Urges Precautions

Preston residents are urged to tell children not to drink water used to spray the new city recreation park. The water is not city supply and not fit for drinking. Some locals complain about water-use limits for lawns while the park has its own pump and irrigation water from canal sources.

Three Car Accidents Leave No Injuries In County

Three automobile crashes occurred in the county this week with no serious injuries. Sunday evening near Weston two cars collided as Larry Dahle attempted a left turn while A S Koller tried to pass. The Koller car went through a ditch into a grain field about 500 feet from the scene. Both drivers escaped unharmed. Damage to the Koller vehicle was around $200. The Dahle car sustained further damage.

Boy Scout Contingent Heads to National Jamboree on Coast

About 82 scouts from Franklin county district Cache valley council BSA left for the national jamboree at Irvine ranch in southern California. The group travels two weeks with scoutmasters J Reid Hoggan Myron Fennesbeck and Gilbert Cafferty, visiting Provo Bryce Canyon Zion San Francisco and Santa Barbara area before arriving at Irvine to camp and tour through July 23.

Queen Contest at Preston Rodeo Grounds Saturday Night

Preston Boots and Saddle club presents a queen contest at the rodeo grounds Saturday at 8 PM. Ten contestants include Barbara Rallison Whitney Bonnie Dee Drury Sondra Beckstead Sharon Spackman Marcella Christensen Doreen Henderson Lauranee Gregory Diane Nash Marjorie Weaver Sally Sant Grace. Judges from Montpelier and Logan. Prizes include horse saddle bridle and more with a trophy and $50 for the winner and $25 for each attendant.

Preston man wins at Salt Lake model plane contest

Don Geisler of Preston won first place in the airplane model contest sponsored by the Salt Lake active modelers on the salt flats. He earned a bronze plaque for the most perfectly finished F8F Bearcat navy carrier plane. Another local man took second place in the same event. About 350 dollars in prizes were awarded to contestants and hobbyists.

Calpack Corp Starts 1953 Canning Season at Franklin Plant

The California Packing corporation plant at Franklin has begun its 1953 canning operations under field superintendent Leo Buttars with six fieldmen. The Franklin plant runs on two shifts with Burton Blamires as superintendent and William H. Biggs assisting. Lorin Hampton and Moyet Whitehead lead warehouse and foremen staff, with Wallace Olsen Jr and J B Wilkinson in key factory roles. Women supervisors Margaret Adamson and Fern Wilkinson, nurses Laurena Dunlop and Minnie Larsen, and vinery bosses H L Sparrow and Art Dursteler oversee operations. About 90 women and 225 men are employed.

Preston chamber committees rush to finish preparations for the three night rodeo starting July 30 with Ray Skinner producing his third straight show. He promises wild bucking roping and bull dogging stock and top summer circuit performers. Tickets may go on sale next week.

Era Rasmussen Dies in Logan Hospital Funeral Saturday

Era C Rasmussen 47 of Smithfield died yesterday after a three week illness in a Logan hospital. Born in Denmark on January 15 1906 she came to the U S in 1907 and settled in Glencoe. She married Julius Rasmussen in 1941 and moved to Smithfield where she lived 12 years. Survivors include her husband and her Jensen parents Preston brothers. Funeral Saturday at 2 p m in Glencoe LDS ward chapel with burial in Preston cemetery.

Weston Pioneer Day Queen Beverly Bingham Reigns

Beverly Bingham will reign as Weston Pioneer Day queen on July 24 with attendants Miss Karren Nielson and Mrs. Bonnie Campbell. The celebration opens July 23 with a dance and includes a daylight salute, a 9:30 parade, 11 a.m. meeting in Weston chapel featuring John Longden, a Cache Valley baseball game, vaudeville at 3:30, and a grand evening variety show.

Weston Couple to Celebrate Golden Date

Weston couple Mr. and Mrs. Albert E. Goodsell mark their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception this Saturday at the Weston LDS chapel. Lifelong Cache valley residents married in Weston in 1903 and later in the Logan temple, they raised 12 children and have 26 grandchildren. The public is invited to the 4 to 9 p.m. reception.
