The Idaho Pioneer reports the annual meeting of the National Farm Loan Association with stockholder members in attendance. Officers and directors were elected including Clifford Warr as secretary treasurer and LeRoy Salveson as a director, with Arnold Anderson and others named in attendance.
The first annual tri school band concert brings West Side High and Preston High bands with Logan High as guest group. John Manning directs West Side while Lynn Bright leads Preston. Selections include Thou Príncipe of Mysost and Gypsy by Strauss with orchestral pieces from Orientals Suite and Green Domino. Continued on page 4.
Members of the Franklin County Livestock Marketing Association will meet in the courthouse basement Thursday February 4 at 2 p m to decide the future status of the organization. Chairman Edgar Potter Borg said members may choose to remain on standby cooperate pool sales or deb on the organization. The meeting will include a discussion of the swine industry and a film showing production methods.
Pvt Sterling L. Sant, son of Mr and Mrs Louis Sant of Preston, recently arrived in Korea for duty with I Corps. He is a pole lineman with Company C of the 1st Signal Battalion and entered the Army last June as the corps conducts post war training and reconditioning of UN units under its control.
J L Driscoll president of First Security Bank announced E fed Steers the new assistant manager of the Time way credit department. Steers was previously a senior clerk in that department. Lloyd J Hogge of the local bank said the First Security system earned 1953 2 684 526 34 dollars or 2 57 a share in Idaho Utah Wyoming after taxes 2 291 168 27 dollars. System resources climbed to 371 545 059 23 dollars at year end 1953 from 353 751 083 18 1952. Since 1928 the system grew from 39 706 011 34 dollars. Hogge noted six oldest intermountain banks formed the nucleus of the system. During 1953 113 086 loans totaled 313 845 987 31 with 66 525 Time way loans totaling 82 147 925 81 for autos appliances home repairs and personal needs. Also 2 765 real estate loans were made.
Stake officers and welfare workers are urged to attend a two day conference at the stake house this weekend. A welfare meeting opens Saturday at 6 30 p m followed by a priesthood meeting at 8 p m All sessions Sunday begin at 10 a m with an evening session at 3 p m George Q Morris and William T Lawrence will represent Salt Lake City church authorities.
A display of student projects from Shoa department schools features leatherwork lathe and furniture samples. The exhibit opens Saturday in Reed's Riteway window, highlighting completed junior and senior high works for public viewing.
William M. Baker, 62, was sentenced to nine months in Franklin County Jail after being convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the death of Reed N. Dahle, 99, of Clarkston, Utah. The jury reduced the charge from second degree murder after deliberating for hours, with Judge Henry McQuade presiding.
Franklin County Treasurer Mrs Tanner announced the first half 1953 tax collection totals. Despite less money collected than 1952, 89 more taxpayers paid, with 4 123 receipts issued and 391 733 97 dollars paid. The official praised residents for staying up to date and urged continued help and service.
Countywide polio fundraiser events run from Friday night to Saturday with a March of Dimes dance at Oneida steakhouse featuring Merlin Smith Orchestra starting 9 30 PM. Door prizes include a coffee table fern stand TV lamp crockery and lamps plus candy popcorn and pastries donated by local groups. Admission is $1 a couple.
Corp Wayne D Johnson of Dayton, after 17 months in Korea, returns to Camp Stoneman California. He praises calmer winter, notes poverty and tents for orphans, and recalls children waiting outside mess for scraps. He cites improvements by the Eighth Army and Korean school and Catholic chapel projects.
The Franklin County district hosts the second annual merit badge exposition featuring firemanship camping woodcarving leatherwork and more. Twenty scout units from explorer posts troops and guide patrols will display their skills with tickets 25 cents at the door on Wednesday February 10 from 6 to 10 p.m.
The annual meeting of the Pioneer National Farm Loan association in Idaho was held Friday Jan. 22 at Oneida stakehouse in Preston. Some 3035 stockholder members from five counties attended. Albert E. Moser of Dayton and W. Li Baker of Malad were reappointed to three year terms on the board. Harold Baissett, Fred Courier Salveson of Downey, Leo D. Williams of adv, and Leonard Nelson of Px were holdover directors. Harold asset presided. The program included Mrs Coy Christensen Manning singing, a valley quartet Grace, and Prof Ernest Morrison, agricultural economist of Logan, spoke on farm management and budgeting and farm credit. Arnold Anderson of the Federal Land Bank praised the association. (Continued on page 4)
Sugar officials in Chicago outlined the 1954 marketing and acreage quotas for beet sugar firms nationwide. Franklin County Sugar Co. received an allotment of 184,374 bags for the calendar year, based on a five year production average, with total sugar from 5600 acres. Growers are urged to meet their quota as both marketing and acreage allotments apply in 1955.
Preston Implement Co. invites farmers and families to John Deere day at the Isis Theatre at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Four or five TM films on farming and implements will be shown, followed by coffee cider and doughnuts at the store north of North State Street. Lee Bergquist and Arnold Sant encourage attendance.
A city photograph shows a winter scene as snow falls again after a lull. Last Saturday into Sunday, 14.1 inches of snow blanketed the area, raising moisture to 8 inches and easing farm and merchant worries as temperatures hovered around freezing.
