1953 Preston district precipitation and temperature summary

The 1953 year end report by C. M. Crabtree shows Preston district recorded 14.56 inches of precipitation, 72 inches of snow, and a high of 95F with a low of -1F. January was the wettest month with 3.35 inches. September was driest at 0.22 inch. The prior year 1952 had 12.06 inches precip and 97.5 inches of snow, with a high of 79F and a low of -16F. The annual average temperature was 0.3 to 3.1 degrees above normal across the years.

Christensen Named Honor Society Candidate At Utah State

Glenn A. Christensen of Preston is among 12 top seniors at Utah State Agricultural College considered for election to Phi Kappa Phi. President H Aldous Dixon spoke at a dinner in the college cafeteria honoring the group. Christensen, son of J A Christensen, represents the school of commerce as a graduate student majoring in sociology.

Four Boys Escape Fire In Ford After Gas Can Ignites

A 1953 Ford in Weston burned to a total loss Sunday night after four boys riding inside placed a gas can in the trunk and overturned it while turning a corner near the sixth ward church. Ernest Dailey drove the car. Thayne Binggeli, Deé Binggeli, and David Hansen were passengers. The back-seat riders were scorched but unharmed after a match sparked a blaze. The car, owned by Joe Binggeli, was insured and lost three and a half months after purchase.

Fortune Teller Keeps Em Busy at Preston High

Preston High prepares its annual school opera The Fortune Teller with rehearsals underway. Performances run February 15 with tickets to go on sale next Monday at the high school, and Carl P. Nielsen can reserve seats at extension 40.

Earl Norton of the Preston Seven-Up Bottling works will donate a carton of Seven-Up for every home in the county. Boy Scouts will sell a carton per home with proceeds to the March of Dimes campaign, aiming to raise the final total to $7,000.

Pvt Cliff Johnson Joins Hell on Wheels in Germany Duty

Pvt Cliff D Johnson son of George L Johnson 211 South State Preston recently arrived in Germany for duty with the second armored division The Hell on Wheels division spearheaded the World War II drive into Germany and is now training as part of the NATO army He is a member of the 41st armored infantry battalion and was previously stationed at Eort Ord California He entered the army last May.

Franklin Youth Chosen for ROTC Program at Utah State

Heavy Fog Cited as Cause of Multiple County Auto Wrecks

Fog contributed to three crashes in the county over the weekend. Henry Drury and Sons Win Progressive Breeder Award

Henry Drury and Sons Preston receive the Progressive Breeder Award from the Holstein Friesian Association of America, the eighth Idaho farm honored and one of 244 nationwide. The Drury herd of 39 animals includes 23 home bred, with 18 cows averaging 472 pounds butterfat and 12,495 pounds milk on double milking. A bronze plaque will be presented at a regional Holstein breeders meeting.

Ben A. Meek reports word of the U S Soil Conservation Service reorganization in Idaho. R N Irving heads Idaho operations and announced the appointment of Tom Helseth as assistant state conservationist. Boise remains the Idaho state office, with few rank changes expected among specialized personnel. Farmers are urged to consult SCS technicians to review farm plans and schedule practices for the year.

Licenses Available for Local Sportsmen in 1954

Local hunters and anglers are reminded that 1954 licenses are available at all vendors. Dean Davis, game warden, stated that anyone carrying a gun in the field or fishing must have a current license. Fees remain the same as last year and regulations stay in effect until March 31 when new laws take effect. Army Show Troupe Headed by Dunkley Son

Kjey Dunkley, son of Mr and Mrs Loria Dunkley, travels with a service show troupe of the Seventh Army. The group departs February 5 for a tour through Austria Italy France Germany and England. Dunkley entered service in August 1933 and led a band at Fort Ord California during basic training.

Pfc Jon R Wanner of Preston is named a member of the 44th infantry division troops in a winter maneuver in Alaska called Operation North Star. Private Alvin Maughan Serves with 28th Infantry in Germany

Pvt Alvin G Maughan is serving with the 28th infantry division in Germany. His wife Lorraine resides in Weston and he recently completed basic training at Fort Ord California.
