Grain Growers Discuss Wheat Varieties and Soil Health
Franklin County farmers heard from Daniel Roberts about factors affecting protein content in wheat. He cited soil fertility weather and variety as key, urged use of green manures like sweet clover, recommended hard red winter varieties Wasatch or Cache, and stressed disease resistance and high protein. He advised growing trebi barley, noted gem may be susceptible to loose smut, and favored overland oats for disease resistance. Roberts warned against excessive nitrogen on dry land and outlined application rates. Dale Drollinger from the Ogden grain co operative illustrated the grain setup and a new two million bushel storage facility in Ogden. Holdover board members listed include W R Geddes Leland Auger B R Meek Cecil Foster and Frank Gilbert.
