Conservation Payments Seen as Efficient Soil Protection
Woodrow Rasmussen, chairman of the Franklin County Agricultural Conservation committee, says payments to farmers for soil and water conservation are essential because conservation safeguards the nation. He notes farmers cover about half the cost and perform the work, warning that unchecked erosion would raise food prices, lower quality, and threaten civilization. Rasmussen cites loss of topsoil since Pilgrim days to urge broad public responsibility.
