Calpak expansion and local canning plants in Cache Valley
The Calpak operation in Cache Valley supports three plants in Franklin, Smithfield, and Hyrum with canning peas beans and sauerkraut. In 1958 the company paid over three million dollars to growers and suppliers, employing about 1300 locally, with green beans yielding the highest returns and thousands of pickers earning substantial wages. Improvements include a new french sliced green bean pack under Del Monte and a sauerkraut plant at Franklin, while research and development drive better strains and crop yields for the region.
