Local Man Elected Head of Lumber Dealers Assn

Floyd Diderickson manager of Preston Lumber Co was elected president of the Intermountain Lumber Dealers Assn at the Salt Lake City convention. He has led the local yard for about 17 years and is active in church civic and club affairs. The meeting forecast total U S building would rise about 10 percent over 1958.

Perkins to attend ASCE pacific southwest conference

Larry V. Perkins son of LeRoy and wife of Clifton will attend the Pacific Southwest Council Conference in Los Angeles February 9 to 13 and enter the student paper competition. His topic is Engineering Success and expenses are paid by the Intermountain section ASCE. He previously won a Utah State University civil engineering student competition and presented the paper in Salt Lake City December 12, 1958.

Preston High Grad Wins Two Year Public Health Grant

Samuel G. Fletcher a 1946 Preston High School graduate and son of Mr and Mrs Sam H Fletcher of Shelley has secured a two year grant totaling $7000 per year from the U S Public Health Service. The research fellowship begins April 1 at the University of Utah where Fletcher will work in speech. He earned a Ph D in speech in 1958 and has served as a clinical assistant in speech pathology at the same university since 1956.

Wheat Growers Plan Meeting In Franklin

Wheat growers in Franklin County will meet Monday at 2 PM in the courthouse basement to elect a district delegate and nominate candidates for the Idaho state wheat commission. County president Evan Koller notes the Idaho legislature passed the wheat commission act, with governor expected to sign, funding through a per bushel levy. Franklin joins a six county district including Bear Lake Bannock Power Ceribou Oneida.

Calpak expansion and local canning plants in Cache Valley

The Calpak operation in Cache Valley supports three plants in Franklin, Smithfield, and Hyrum with canning peas beans and sauerkraut. In 1958 the company paid over three million dollars to growers and suppliers, employing about 1300 locally, with green beans yielding the highest returns and thousands of pickers earning substantial wages. Improvements include a new french sliced green bean pack under Del Monte and a sauerkraut plant at Franklin, while research and development drive better strains and crop yields for the region.

Idaho officials urge tax mix with sales levy and rate shifts

State representatives pressed for a sales tax only with offsetting income and property tax cuts at Boise meeting. Leaders from the Idaho county commissioners and clerks reviewed bills and proposed measures including county retirement programs and keeping traffic fines locally. They favored five mills for indigent funds and opposed highway district annexation without broad area coverage.

Famed trumpet virtuoso Rafael Mendez to perform in Franklin County

World acclaimed trumpeter Rafael Mendez will play Friday evening March 13 in the high school auditorium. John Manning, the band director, says the performance is a rare privilege for Franklin County residents and urges broad ticket sales to showcase the artist's superb technique and tone.

Coburn Trial Set in Franklin County February

The trial of Max Coburn for negligent homicide in the November auto deaths of Donald and Hazel Baxter is slated in Franklin County Fifth District Court on February 24 with Judge John A. Carver presiding. Jurors include Vera Cole Beatrice Bennett Joyce Perry Myrl Bodily Richard Ballif Thayne Harris Wesley Biggs Dwight Wilde Sidney Riggs Floyd H. Melanie Poole Named 1959 Homemaker of Tomorrow

Melanie Poole, a Preston High School senior, won the 1959 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow title at an FHA assembly. She scored highest on a 50 minute homemaking exam and will compete with other state winners for the All American honor with a $1,500 scholarship and a school trip to Washington, D C, Williamsburg, New York City and Minneapolis.

Garrett Truck Rolls on Icy Linrose Road Mishap

On slick county roads a Garrett truck rolled over near Linrose on Tuesday at 10 30 am. Driver Allen Dunn applied air brakes to slow for a car when the trailer skidded off the road and overturned into a field. Dunn suffered slight chest injuries but was not hospitalized. Small damage to truck and trailer reported.

Preston Indians Triumph Over Marsh Valley Eagles

Preston high school defeated Marsh Valley 45 to 32 at home as Steven Porter scored 15 points and Leon Almond 10 to lead the Indians. David Keller topped all scorers with 21. The win keeps Preston undefeated at home before Friday’s clash with Blackfoot.

Freak Accident Injures Girl In Provo

Marsha Benson daughter of Mr and Mrs Orval Benson sustained a severe hand injury in Provo when a BYU bell shifted on a pickup truck crushing her right thumb and fingers. She spent days in Provo hospital and is now recovering at home.
