Local weather observer M. Crabtree reports November precipitation above normal by .35 inches with 1.79 inches for the month and 15.7 inches of snow. Temperatures averaged 42.2 daytime and 21.3 night, with three below zero nights and a historic 22 degree below zero on Nov 18. December shows 1.51 inches of precipitation and 19 inches of snow so far.
Sigmund Romberg’s The Desert Song has been chosen by Preston High School’s music department for this year’s performance. Lyle Shipley, vocal music director, reports record turnout as tryouts proceed for dances and leading roles.
The annual beet growers meeting will be held Monday at 1 a.m. in the basement of the courthouse. Two directors will be elected for two year terms. A report on the beet situation will be reviewed, followed by an educational film provided by the Union Pacific Railroad. All sheet growers urged to attend.
At West Side High School two basketball games are listed for the week with a junior varsity and varsity schedule. Wednesday featured a game away against Marsh Valley and Friday Soda Springs will play at Dayton starting at 7 PM.
Utah Power announces free electricity for Christmas lights in 123 cities and towns across Utah Idaho and Wyoming. Service runs from dusk to midnight December 1 through January 1. Wendell Utah Power Preston division manager notes AP and L supplied wires to connect decorations. The program illuminated about 43 000 lights and 222 000 power hours this season.
West Side High mixed chorus will present a Christmas cantata The Music of Bethlehem under the direction of Marlin V Hill. The program is set for 8 15 p m Thursday Dec 22 in the Evaston Ward Chapel. Special numbers include solos by Renée Bingham and Roger Campbell with duets by Clara Bowden and Carol Tanner and Margaret Beutler and Shirlee Sparrow.
Melvin Griffeth, Preston school principal, and Dean Rust, local businessman, are named stake scout commissioner staff in Franklin stake. They replace Gilbert Cafferty and W. M. Iackleyn respectively and invite unit leaders to monthly stake leadership meetings. Charters come from the national council with Elmo Peterson handling presentation plans.
Lloyd S Forsgren and A L Snowy Stocks were named candidates for president at a Dec 7 meeting. Bruce Lowe and Deward Gambles vying for vice president, Richard Tutts and Dell Smith for secretary treasurer, with district No 2 nominees Jed Bowles and Cliff Whitehead, and district No 3 nominees Orville Moser and Ken ees. Outgoing officers will be Forsgren, Peterson, Smith, Lowe, McGregor, and Oliverson.
The traditional Christmas oratorio will be presented by Franklin stakehouse combined men and women choruses next Monday at 8 oclock. Mrs Elda Carlson directs. God's Trombones read by Prof Floyd and Edith Morgan of Logan with choruses providing music. Performances sponsored by the Ladies Literary club and Preston Rotary club. Soloists include Coy Manning Lois Beck Loyal Hansen Maxine Hymns and Maxine Hymas. Accompanists TM Francine Oliverson and Constance Davis.
The Idaho State Chamber of Commerce announced the election of 15 directors for three year terms. They were chosen from a slate of 25 nominees approved at the All Idaho congress and elected by statewide mail ballot. One-year term director A. N. Scotty Wendell of Utah Power & Light Co Preston division was among those elected.
A free children’s movie program is offered in the county area this Saturday starting at 10 am at the Isis Theatre. The event features the film Smokey and three cartoons, with Santa Claus appearing after the show.
The Utah Idaho cutter race groups met December 7 in Elks Lodge to outline the season. They voted to consolidate into one Rocky Mountain Cutter Association. Races will run this year among groups from West Yellowstone Montana Galt Lake City Utah Salmon City valley and Wyoming east and west. A trophy will be awarded to the winning group at season end. Officers elected: Bill Condie Thatcher president Harold Pond Lewiston Ut vice president Blaine Schwaneveldt Preston secretary. A race schedule will be drawn up soon.
The Citaber of Commerce met Monday to elect officers for 1956. Nash is named president Weldon Dunn becomes vice president William P. Shumway remains executive. The new board begins duties in January after the annual dinner and installation January 16 with Dr Daryl Chase of USAC to speak.
Mr and Mrs Tom Heath depart this week for San Francisco and sail next Wednesday to Honolulu Hawaii to observe their 40th wedding anniversary on the islands.
About 850 farmers in Bear Lake Caribou Franklin and Gem counties will share 14900 dollars from the Idaho Pioneer National Farm Loan association. This is the Idaho Pioneer NFLA share of a 359000 dollar dividend declared by the Federal Land Bank of Spokane. The bank is owned by Idaho Montana Oregon Washington NFLAs and member borrowers. Since 1944 the bank paid over 2900000 dollars in dividends, benefiting local members to about 120000 dollars. The 6 percent dividend is for stockholders of record November 30 1955 and will be passed to farmer members through their associations to reduce loan interest costs.
Mabel Atkinson and her daughter Frances of Dayton now living in Salt Lake City won first prize in a national Thanksgiving association short story contest with titles Thanksgiving in the Heart and Sally Learns About Thanksgiving. They received $25 and the book This Is America The book of American Thanksgiving poetry. Idaho earned second place withWalter Thoresen of Malad High school for Yankee Spirit. The state combined first and second places, a first in NTA history.
The Preston Indians beat Logan 56 to 51 to start the 1955 56 basketball season. Top scorer Clark Johnson with 15 points fouled out for the third time in three games. Jensen added 13, Moser 7, Scholes 5, Stokes 6, Bennett 2, Webb 8 as Preston rallied from a 10 15 deficit after the first period to lead 41 38 at halftime.
The Ford Foundation announced nationwide grants totaling nearly 30 million for institutions and hospitals, including a 10000 grant to the Franklin County General Memorial Hospital in Preston Idaho. Citizens and local officials praised the award as a much needed boost for the county hospital.
The Preston Indians split their first two games 63-47 against South Cadet High and 40-51 to Pocatello. Guardian Clark Johnson led with 13 points, McKell Crawford 12, Gail Moser 10, while Scholes and Johnson fouled out. Openers were rescheduled: West Side Pirates game to Jan 23 and Montpelier to Jan 20 in anticipation of the new gym.
Frank J. Gilbert of Fairview named Farm Bureau chairman for Franklin County. Gaylord Larson Preston first vice chairman. Myron Merrill second vice chairman. Mrs. C. K. Bailey Clifton named county women's chair. Elmo Petersen hired secretary. Local officers include Ralph Esp Preston area chairman and Gaylord Larson county director. Continuous officer lists follow by locality and women’s committees across several towns.
Glen Jensen was elected Saturday to the five member Franklin soil conservation district board of supervisors. Other candidates were Ben Meek and Fay Wilde. All rural landowners in the county were eligible to vote and turnout was excellent, according to polling superintendent Melvin Smith.
