The 1953 sugar beet campaign concluded Saturday after 52 days of production with all beets in Franklin County harvested by November 15. Despite record low temperatures down to 22 below zero, harvest completed though several Idaho areas left beets in the ground as winter approached.
The Preston 4-H leaders recognition and training session featured remarks by President D. R. Theophilus on Idaho land grant admittance for rural youths. Activities included violin soloists, a county-wide awards presentation, and praise for 4-H club work across seven southeast Idaho counties. Meanwhile Franklin County’s sugar beet harvest was praised as one of the finest crops, with officials urging growers to sign up for 1956 acreage and noting weather helped harvesting despite prior shipments.
Three Idaho National Guard officers visited Preston to gauge local support and facilities for a potential guard unit. Lt. Col. H V Smith Maj. C P Debevoise and Lt. AOC Allen reported favorable reaction and said the county could fund a $500 minimum for an armory to attract federal aid for a permanent facility to serve the county fairgrounds and civic events.
The Franklin County Flower and Garden Club will hold its annual winter meeting in the county courthouse Monday at 8 p m. Mrs Ida Kemp of Lewiston Utah and Mrs Ida Mae Hall of Preston will demonstrate Christmas decorations and arrangements. Refreshments will be served and officers for the coming year will be elected. The meeting is open to everyone.
Affleck Motors announces the grand opening of its new Buick GMC Willys agency building at 121 South State Street. The remodeling adds a paint and body shop, service and sales under one roof with an expanded parts department. Saturday events include hotdogs and drinks for visitors.
Preston High School won first place in the Americanism contest sponsored by men's civic clubs to commemorate Americanism week. Under faculty director Nett Boethe, the program aired on KPST and at the Preston Lions meeting on Nov 23. Read by Dalan Smith the prize essay on Speak for Democracy. Nina Jensen contrasted freedom in America with Denmark where she was born. senior boys quartet comprised Darrel Jepsen Lynn Bennett Neil Talbot and Glade Dursteller. Judges were O D Robinson Rotary aughn Greaves Lions and Bergquist Elks and Kiwanis clubs.
Chief Harold Campbell releases the November repo NFO detailing 11 traffic accidents and 18 parking fines totaling 1,480.18. Violations listed include speeding two, stop signs three, failure to yield one, negligent driving four, drunk driving two, reckless driving one, no license one, muffler one, petty larceny three, shoplifting one, warrants one, vandalism three, Green River ordinance one. Also notes 17 dogs destroyed.
At the ASC county convention held Tuesday Delmer L. Olsen reported three member committee with two alternates chosen A C Hull named chairman for 1956 term Von Atkinson named vice chairman Eldon B Bingham elected regular member Leeral Jensen and Elliot Smith chosen as alternates
The Jaycees announce their annual poster contest open to Jefferson Preston and West Side High School students. Cash prizes will be awarded. entries judged December 19 with winners displayed in the J C Penney Co window during Christmas week. Last year’s winners were Darlis Woodward Dee Doney and Linda Nielson.
The Oneida stake held a Saturday evening music festival with a capacity crowd for two hours of entertainment from five stakes. Winners were announced by district music supervisor Marlin V. Hill after judging from 16 groups, with ties in the womens quartet representing Portneuf and Bannock. Grace second ward and Downey ward tied for first, while Preston third ward won the male division and Portneuf stake took the mixed quartet with Downey group members. Accompanists and festival staff from five stakes assisted, and Kathryn Fairbanks attended from the general board of MIA.

Preston officials plan Santa arrivals at 1 30 pm at the old Opera House to hand out candy bags to every youngster under 12. Santa will also visit Preston stores as local shops stay open at 7 30 pm for Christmas shoppers with 1200 candy bags distributed by the Chamber of Commerce.
Kenneth Porter owner of Ken's Electric Co denies rumors of closure in Preston after Golden Rule Safeway Jensen Implement Co and Newley's Market announce exits. He stresses the business remains open despite four local store closures in recent weeks.
Eldredge Grant Jr a Salt Lake City lawyer and churchman will address the Oneida stake Melchizedek priesthood gathering Saturday at 7 30 p m in the Oneida stake house. Clayter Fors aren program chairman. Music by Chelta M Snyder. The event welcomes Melchizedek priesthood members and their wives with dancing and supper.
From Franklin county, three men were released from the armed services in November. Berkeley Palmer was discharged from the army on November 23, John Baker was discharged from the navy on November 23, and Larry Bailey Kerr was discharged from the air force on November 26. All three were Preston residents and each received the National Defense Service Medal. Delbert Wayne Hubbard, Grace, was inducted into the army on December 1.
Franklin County highway department officials urge car owners to keep rights of way clear of machinery and vehicles in winter. Past winters saw cars pushed into borrow pits when snowplows could not see vehicles parked at road edges.
Franklin County grain growers announce the annual meeting of the co operative to be held Saturday in the basement of the Franklin County courthouse. Directors will be elected, financial reports heard, and other business transacted. Speakers include Dr Ladra Jensen and Wene Postma. Evans urges all members to attend and contribute views on the farm program.
Safeway official statement releases closure of its Preston store as of Saturday December 17. W. E. Williams, Salt Lake division manager, cites inadequate facilities and lack of off street parking as main factors. He regrets leaving the community and hopes to reestablish in Preston in the future, noting continued employment opportunities at other Safeway stores.
Jefferson school will present a musical cantata Thursday evening December 22 at 7 30 in the Preston High school auditorium under direction of Mervin. The cantata is sponsored by the PTA and invited are Central school children. There will also be a candy sale. The public is invited.
Farmers and families invited to Isis Theatre next Tuesday for six color films headlined by Tim's Choice. The Gordon family appears in Lease on the Future, with a Deere day lineup featuring What's New for 1956 and modern farm machinery demos.
