Eastside School District 201 announces Tuesday September 1 as first day with about 2000 students returning. Superintendent W H Simmons says buildings remodeled and vacancies filled except Oneida Station one teacher post and Jefferson fourth grade.
The Franklin County fair hosts a nationwide crochet contest open to all who crochet with a prize pool of 2600 dollars. Blue ribbons will be awarded in 16 classifications including tablecloths bedspreads luncheon sets and several accessory categories.
Pfc Wayne Cottle was freed in April after being a prisoner of war in Korea. He left behind three Idaho boys, Dale Smith of New Plymouth Nyle Jones of Twin Falls and Robert Winsor of Idaho Falls, all once prisoners in the same camp. The three are among the first Idaho captives to be released in the exchange.
The Preston Chamber of Commerce will hold a stag dinner at Preston High School Stadium on August 31. President Phil West seeks a well known out of town speaker and asks each member to bring a Franklin County farmer or agricultural worker. Activities include softball, horseshoes, volleyball with prizes, games at 7 pm and a cafeteria style chicken dinner followed by a program.
Invitations sent to more than a thousand farm families announce the Franklin County fair Fun Day on Aug 27. Festivities begin 10 15 A M with prize giveaways, a east versus west baseball game at 11, dairy products at cost, and snack prices. Activities include a girls softball game at 1, children's races at 3, a tractor driving contest, and a softball game between Oneida and Franklin stakes at 3 30. Winners receive cash prizes. participants must pre register by Aug 26.
Weston, Franklin stake tournament champions, compete in Salt Lake City all church tourney. The 17 and under team swept local play then won the Logan division tourney 36-1 and 33-5. Season record 12 games, 213 points for and 90 against. The Preston Elks lodge and many individuals and firms helped construct two 80 by 120 foot concrete tennis courts for the city park. The Elks donate the courts to the city recreation commission and plan to flood them in winter for skating. Floyd Diderickson of Preston Lumber Co supplied concrete at cost and provided mixing and hauling free.
Mr and Mrs Davis McEntire and their children from Berkeley California stayed several days in Preston visiting his parents Mr and Mrs Wells McEntire. Davis McEntire a UC Berkeley statistics professor travels to Europe for a year of research on Italian population problems funded by a Guggenheim grant. He is a Preston High School and Utah State College alumnus with Harvard training. Mrs McEntire is Iras Leavitt, daughter of James O Leavitt of Seattle formerly of Ogden.
Six men in Franklin county received certificates and wings from the ground observance corps of the air force command after extensive civilian defense training. Post supervisor Scott Dunlop led the meeting attended by Idaho air defense filter center representatives where the awards were presented by Boise personnel S/Sgt Robert Grunson and A1C Robert Daniel.
Preston High basketball star Ivan Davis has trained for a week for the all star games this week. He is named a co captain alongside Jez Lockyer of Idaho Falls. The first court tilt is continued on page 4.
Idaho dairyman G C Anderson from Boise will judge 4-H and open class dairy exhibits at the Franklin County fair on August 27 and 28. He is well known to local exhibitors and has judged dairy cattle at the Cache County show in Logan this week.
The Preston Local Farm Bureau announces talent fund talk meet and Farm Bureau beauty contests to be held August 24 at 8 p.m. in the third ward chapel. Rural Youth officers Vaughn Hawkes and Mrs. Garth Eames say all local members may enter talk meet, with age 18 to 28 for contestants. talent find is divided into three age groups. beauty contestants must be 17 or older. Contact Mrs. Garth Eames for participation details.
Franklin County fair expands with a new class allowing commercial flower growers to exhibit and win prizes. W. E. Crane, superintendent, says definition covers those selling flowers in quantity. Home gardeners may enter, special house plant class added, exhibits in the county courthouse basement Friday and Saturday August 28 and 29.
Northward view shows the new tennis courts at the city park nearing completion. Elks lodge members are ready to pour and smooth final slabs as Preston Ready Mix Concrete Co. supplies concrete for the project at cost.
The second annual Franklin County Farm Bureau fun day opens at Preston city park and fair grounds on Aug 27 with 10 45 a m events including refreshments at cost kiddie races tractor driving contest rodeo arena softball game and Rural Youth talent finals in Isis theatre Farm Bureau prizes announced at 10 45 a m Five and four H projects judged Aug 27 to 29 with open class exhibits and a county dairy cattle show inviting out of county exhibitors chaired by W M Robinson.
Two trustee seats on the Eastside district 201 school board have no nominees yet. Election is set for Tuesday September 1 at Jefferson for zone 4 Riverdale and Winder for zone 3 with Treasureton residents voting Riverdale and Banida residents at Winder. Nominations due August 26 by 5 p.m. and must be signed by five qualified electors in each zone. Terms expire for O D Robinson chair and DeRalph Perry treasurer.
All West Side School District 202 schools begin Monday August 31 for student registration. Buses run same routes as last year and students will be home by lunchtime. Tuesday starts regular session with hot lunches. Five new teachers join the system including John Manning June Larsen Eldon Hansen at the high school and Abed Chatterson Lois Everton to elementary schools.
Two Franklin youths Bartlett Hill and Max Atkinson were injured when a scaffold under construction at the Lever Doney farm gave way Saturday morning. Hill suffered a compound fracture of the left arm and a fractured left leg, while Atkinson sustained a badly bruised knee and was released from the hospital. Hill was taken to Preston by ambulance and later to a Salt Lake City bone specialist. his arm remains in poor condition and he faces an indefinite stay at LDS Hospital.
Preston Carnegie library will reopen Monday after a three week closure for repairs and redecorating. The ceiling was lowered lights repaired and a new paint job added. Books due between Aug 17 and Aug 24 will not incur overdue fines.
Jack Grande, former relief manager and ex Rexburg store head, becomes Preston Safeway manager replacing David Thornton who moves to Pocatto east side store. Grande, married with three children, hails from Philadelphia and met his wife while stationed at Kearns Field during World War II.
Franklin County fair announces special awards for 4-H dairy and FFA exhibitors. The Holstein heifer prize goes to the top dairy club member, presented Aug 29 during the junior rodeo. Cache Valley Breeders Assn offers artificial insemination prizes and free service to blue ribbon dairy exhibitors, with vouchers for proven sires from Utah Idaho Proved Sire service. Mink Creek area contestants contend for the top cash awards of 50, 30 and 20 dollars for best female dairy exhibit. Chiffon cake awards include silver-plated items and cookbooks per page 52 in the premium list.
