Outdoor Annie Get Your Gun set for Preston stage

The Preston Community Theater presents an outdoor production of the Western musical Annie Get Your Gun behind the high school. Over 75 people perform with guest directors from Snow College and local choreographers and designers contributing to the show funded by an Idaho Commission of Arts and Humanities grant.

Conservationist LeaMon Baird Receives US Merit Certificate

LeaMon Baird of Preston in the Soil Conservation Service earned a US Department of Agriculture certificate of merit for July 1968 to June 1970. The award, signed by Guy W Nutt, cites leadership in watershed protection dryland conservation and RC&D potential.

County buys $100,000 rock crusher for road work

Franklin county approved a $100,000 rock crusher purchase to speed county road construction and cut costs. The $84,975 bid from Kimbel Equipment of Salt Lake City included a $24,286 trade allowance, making the total just over $109,000. Arand Machinery of Idaho Falls at $82,971 was rejected for not meeting specs. The commission also denied three tax relief requests due to missed filing deadlines and reviewed juvenile probation system results.

Area Drivers Licenses Dropped and Reinstatements Noted

State department of law enforcement suspended licenses for four drivers from Caribou and Franklin counties. John Burnell Johnson Bancroft and John Scheid Kunz of Sodatigay faced reckless driving actions, with Kunz later reinstated. Franklin county drivers Glen W. Coburn and Silas J Dalton faced DUI and related issues, Coburn reinstated, Andrea sen reinstated. Neil Mockli Anderson of Weston had license cancellation and denial.

Car Hits Train After Stall on Tracks Near Preston

Donna Golightly 17 of Preston drove through a railroad crossing losing sight of the tracks due to high weeds. The car sustained about 200 dollars damage to the left fender but no injuries to Golightly or passengers Gaylene Hodges and Sherra Evans. Train crew became aware only after brakemen spotted the damaged vehicle. Captain Twitchell the engineer from Pocatello was not hurt.

Youth Meet With Rep Hansen During Preston Visit

Rep Orval Hansen will visit Preston Friday to meet local youth, especially potential voters, after a no host breakfast at Pop N Pins at 7 am. He will tour the courthouse and speak before continuing to Soda Springs, staying in Preston until 9 am.

City orders new fire truck chassis and pumper

City officials reported at a council meeting on August 3 that a International chassis has been ordered and a 1,000 gallon Superior pumper body will be sought next. Delivery is hoped after year’s start due to funding limits. the current county truck is no longer adequate.

Grade School Registration Set in Eastside District

Registration for students in grades one to five at Central Franklin and Whitney schools in the Eastside district runs August 25 to 27. It will be held upstairs at Central School in Preston. An activity fee of two dollars is required this year.

District Sells Bonds For New Grade School

The district sold 800000 in school bonds at a net rate of 5.2704 percent to Boettcher and Company of Denver for the East side elementary project. High bid from United Bank of Denver yielded 5.71 percent. Interest cost totals 301998.50. Bids for the building are expected late September or early October. An Aug 17 meeting at 7:30 p.m. will discuss building materials with the board and citizens committee. Annual audit shows year start deficit 5955.43, end balance 7042.05 in general fund.

Protest Filed On Purchase Of Fire Truck

A formal protest against the purchase of a fire truck was filed by Ed Smith of Lorenzo against the city’s bid specifications. The protest cites a low bid and alleges irregularities in the negotiations. The matter was sent to Mayor Glen Gamble for review during the council’s regular meeting this Thursday.
