The 1948 Preston night rodeo ended a windy week with three shows on a shoestring budget. Promoters faced weather setbacks and higher costs while crowds debated admission prices and show length. Rider after rider fell, but the crowd enjoyed a tough stock and strong performances.
Franklin county canning center reports steady use in July with a daily average of 652 cans and patrons processing over 4 000 cans. Supervisors note peas dominated the output though 4 000 units were canned. August expected strong runs in corn and string beans with other garden vegetables also processed. The center aids housewives in handling large quantities of fruit amid heavy fruit month.
The Daughters of Utah Pioneers Franklin county hold their annual convention in Preston on Saturday August 21 at 2 30 p m. Meetings occur in the courthouse basement with a visiting member from the central camp present for officer elections. Light refreshments will be served after the session.
Mrs. Cliff Bosworth observed a man steal a spare tire from a Kaiser near rodeo grounds and noted license numbers. Police traced the car to Loyd Bowman of St. Charles Ida who pled guilty to petty larceny and was fined 100 dollars with a 20 day jail term suspended. Bowman was later taken into custody with aid from Chief Durwood Hull and Patrolman Glenn Kendle.
The Preston junior chamber of commerce and Jaycees in Idaho promote Keep Idaho Green with highway signs at Preston entrances and Montpelier, plus a Weston area placement. Mayor Ernest Eberhard Jr proclaims Aug 12 to 21 as Keep Idaho Green campaign days to prevent forest and range fires.
Coach Bob Bunker and two Preston Indians players Reed Merrill and Glen Meek coach the East squad in Boise for the annual Idaho high school all star game. J A Babe Brown will tutor the West. Practice began August 2 with the east likely outweighed by 25 pounds per man but Bunker has overcome such gaps before.
W H Simmons reports the year begins August 31 with a full grade school teaching staff but vacancies in high school subjects including commercial Spanish history chemistry and physics. Applications are being received. A general teachers meeting is planned for August 30 in the East Side district.
City officials warn property owners to trim overhanging trees to seven feet above sidewalks. Chief Durwood Hall notes numerous complaints about untrimmed trees and weeds obstructing walks. If noncompliant, the city will perform the work and bill owners.
Urias Keller age 70 died at his Mink Creek home last Thursday after a long illness A civic leader he helped obtain electric power for Mink Creek residents He was born April 7 1878 at Mantua Utah and lived most of his life in Mink Creek He married Ada Irene Smith in 1904 and after her death in 1930 wed Annie Smith in 1935 He was a high priest quorum member in Oneida stake and served in Mink Creek ward bishopric and on the LDS chapel building committee Funeral services were held Monday at Mink Creek chapel with Bishop Charles Christensen presiding
Me anklin Will hosts the quarterly meeting of priesthood leaders in Salt Lake City. The conference includes general sessions Sunday with morning and evening programs and an MIA production titled This is the time to take hold of our blessings.
The three game series on Tuesday night featured tight scores among junior league teams. Preston II beat Fairview 7 8 in game one, and 6 7 in game two while West Side defeated Franklin 6 8. Two playoff games remain to finish Franklin junior’s season with Preston II and Preston I games scheduled for 7 PM and 9 PM respectively. Harland Simmons notes series awards for teams and players to be published after final games.
A Preston area event titled Preston Taniot Rodeo is planned for August 21. Organizers, including DeMat Jerry Day Jack Moser and Kay Anderson, will select a queen and feature standard rodeo attractions.
A free Friday night program at Prestons High School auditorium under Franklin county 4-H clubs showcases non technical progress in science. Demonstrations include jet propulsion rubber manufacture artificial illumination sound recording and recent lab discoveries. The show starts at 8 p.m. and invites public attendance.
Two young men from Mink Creek ward accept calls this week becoming the sixth and seventh missionaries from the ward. Mardel Nielson will go to the Denmark mission and Blaine Larsen to the southern states mission. They will enter the mission home in Salt Lake City on September 13, with farewell party dates to be announced later.
A special stage show titled Asylum of Horrors advertised for Isis theatre next Tuesday features stageside tricks by Dr Sukini and company. Performances at 7 30 and 9 38 include spirits tricks and a wild man character with a gorilla escape. Audience participation is promised.
The six month project funds a state offer and installs a three way police radio in a local patrol car. The first set went in Tuesday in Pocatello with Chief Durwood Hull. Sheriff Lee Hansen’s car soon follows, and State Patrolman Jay Wakeman will get a set next. A transmitter in police headquarters will be active in about two weeks linking Logan Brigham City and Pocatello. The system aims to speed joint efforts across Idaho Utah towns including Preston.
The Marine ship will be named Pfc Leonard C Brostrom in memory of the 24 year old Preston soldier killed Oct 28 1944 on Leyte Philippines. Brostrom son of Carl J Brostrom was a rifleman in company F 17th infantry regiment of the 7th infantry division. He charged a Japanese pillbox alone drawing heavy fire and threw a grenade into its interior before being killed after eight days of combat. The Medal of Honor and Purple Heart were sent to his father after the action.
Edwin J Nuffer of route one Preston won a melting ice time guessing contest held by Tanner's men store. Nearly 1,000 entered guesses as the ice melted in 26 hours 5 minutes 30 seconds. Nuffer's guess was 26 hours 3 minutes 4 seconds earning a $9.50 work shoe prize.
Police arrested G L Satterfield of Ogden and Samuel W Fertig of Seattle after a lookout was nabbed during an attempt to force entry into the state liquor store on Oneida Street. Morphine and cocaine found in Satterfield’s car link to a Grace drugstore robbery. suspects turned to Bannock County Sheriff with a warrant.
In Franklin county light turnout with about 1030 Republican ballots and 200 or so Democratic approvals. Marion Jensen won a key state senate GOP contest with 431 votes, defeating Geddes and Davis. Vernon Mendenhall and Angus Condie led in their races for state representative and county commissioner, while other totals show Dworshak Sanborn Evans Hansen and others attracting votes.
Spaganee announces the vacancy filled by the death of Ivan Geary. William Biggs becomes assistant to Mr Blamires. Burton Blamires has served as assistant manager for 14 years, with a 20 year career starting at the Ogden plant and moving to Spanish Fork and Franklin. The new manager is a former Lions International president and active in LDS church work.
Franklin county FFA members David Beckstead Clair Hollingsworth and Clyde Ashcroft exhibited steers at the Ogden junior fat stock show held August 3 and 4. The Preston FFA team earned a blue ribbon and two red ribbons, aiming for higher prices with August fat cattle. They were hosted at a banquet by the Ogden chamber of commerce.
The body of Pvt Lee L Benson killed in Germany during the Battle of the Bulge was returned and laid to rest at 3 p.m. Monday in Logan city cemetery under Maurice Tingey of the Weston ward LDS Church. Benson born April 26 1926 Weston son of Morgan and Myrtle Benson is survived by parents four siblings and grandparents in Logan and Fairview. A prayer at the home preceded the service and a male trio sang Jesus Lover of My Soul before Ezra T Benson of Weston offered the prayer.
