Franklin County Warns Farmers on Immediate Noxious Weeds Control

County commissioners inform farmers to curb noxious weeds this week to prevent seeding. Weed supervisor Hyrum Johnson announces control methods including mowing and 2,4-D or soil sterilants. Landowners are reminded under Idaho state weed law to act now to keep fields clear of Canada thistle, morning glory, and other troublesome species.

Grain Growers Vote Dividends in Fr County

The Franklin County Grain Growers Inc board voted in July to pay 14000 dollars in dividends to members holding series C stock. The dividends will be paid at the annual meeting held in December 1957.

Fire alarms respond to minor Preston area blazes

Two fire alarms were answered last Thursday and Sunday by local firemen. A man was taken to Parley Shaffer's home in Preston Thursday night when an electric water heater wire smoked. No damage occurred. Sunday noon LaVon Larsen's ranch northeast of Preston reported a weed burn that escaped to burn only a few fence posts.

The Franklin County Sugar Co. calls beet growers to irrigate during August to maximize growth. Company fieldmen stress ample moisture and plant nutrients to help beets reach their best in the hot month.

Junior Stock Sale Planned at Franklin County Fair

Officials and auctioneers from the Cache Valley Livestock Auction Co will conduct the second annual junior fat stock sale at the Franklin County Fair. The sale is set for Friday August 30 at 1 p m with eligible 4 H and FFA projects that have judging and grading on Thursday August 29. Local groups are invited to bid on steers lambs and hogs, under direction of Merlin Wittle Greene Wells Bert Winn and auctioneer Leland McCling.

Dayton Ward Church Memorial Services Set Before Demolition

Memorial services will be held Saturday evening August 19 at 8 p m to honor older ward members before the Dayton Ward Church is torn down to make room for a new chapel. Following the services social recreation and light refreshments will be served in the recreation hall. All ward members former members and friends are invited. In lieu of flowers contributions to the new chapel are welcome and will be listed in the cornerstone and bishop's office.

American Saddlers Appear at Franklin County Fair

Fairview Couple to Celebrate Golden Wedding

Mr and Mrs Thomas John Hall of Fairview celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. Born in 1876 and 188? they married Aug 7 1907 in the Salt Lake Temple. They have 10 children 30 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. An open house is set Saturday in Fairview from 4 to 9 pm with no gifts.

Bergquist Named New Police Chief by City Council

Don Bergquist, 34, a four year city patrolman born in Grace and longtime Preston resident, was appointed by Mayor O Sherwin Webb and the city council as the new police chief to replace Harold Campbell who resigns to move to California. Lee Hendrickson, 21, Preston, is named new patrolman after Bergquist’s appointment. he recently married Maurine Sparrow of Dayton.

Local Girls Trio Vie for Spot on Ted Mack Show

A Preston High School girls trio Julie Simmons Louise Johnson Janet Knudson Seamons and accompanist Diane Palmer went to Salt Lake City to try for the Ted Mack amateur hour. They won twice in the five week contest and now compete this Friday at 8:30 PM in Salt Lake City with other contestants. Winners earn a trip to New York to appear on the show.

Premium Lists Mailed for 1957 Franklin County Fair

The 1957 Franklin County Fair premium lists have been mailed to all superintendents secretaries and exhibitors from 1956. William M. Robinson announced that anyone wanting a premium list should write call or visit the Senity agent's office.
