Completion of Five Mile Project Expected by Sept 1

County Agent Daniel Roberts notes the Five Mile erosion project near east Dayton, Franklin County, aims for a September 1 completion and dam dedication. He credits L M Winsor the Salt Lake City engineer and Thomas Heath of Franklin County Sugar Co as the key leaders who secured plans and funds over 20 years of effort.

New Ballot Faces Voters In Primary

Franklin county voters will find a perforated primary ballot with Republican on one side and Democratic on the other. Voters select one party, tear the ticket, and give it to a judge for deposit. the unvoted ticket goes to the blank ballot box. If a ticket is spoiled, a new one is supplied. Precinct judges are listed for Banida to Preston with names across many towns.

LDS Missionaries Chosen for Pageant Roles at Cumorah

Two eastern state LDS missionaries from Franklin County are cast in the Hill Cumorah pageant America’s Witness for Christ to be staged Aug 7 8 and 9. J Neff Boothe portrays the Prophet Mormon and Paul B Winn aids housing and the Utah Centennial chorus participation. The pageant, on four levels on the hill, depicts scenes from the Book of Mormon and draws crowds from across the nation and abroad.

Franklin Farms Hit by Destructive Hail Friday

A severe hailstorm struck Franklin Friday causing heavy damage east of the village. Crops were wiped out on the Wallace Chatterton Jr. farm while a heavy downpour damaged other fields including Ossie and Cyril Lowe and several Wright and Woodward families. Water was cut off as the Chattertons cleared a clogged pipeline with neighbors’ help.

Barn and Old Car Lost in Two Fires

A barn at East Oneida owned by James C. Higgins was destroyed by two fires caused by exploding gas and oil. Firemen contained the blaze but vines on the house withered from heat. Damages around 2000 dollars. Earlier, an acetylene torch fire at Owen Casperson’s residence destroyed an old car valued at about 125 dollars.

Annual Junior Rodeo Set for August 30

The annual Myron Day junior rodeo is scheduled for August 30 at the South County fair tower arena. Young riders are invited to participate and a queen will be chosen with later announcement of the selection date. Thirty percent of gate receipts will fund an exhibit building for the county fair.

Bachelor Degree Won by Neal Keller

Neal Keller son of Mr and Mrs James E Keller of Preston will receive a bachelor of science in executive interior decoration from Woodbury College Los Angeles at the commencement in Immanuel Presbyterian church Wilshire and Berenda at 8 p m He is a Preston High School graduate who edited the year book and served in the U S infantry during World War II.

East Side district 201 sets Sept 2 start. roofs and hires in focus

School year opens Sept 2 with a teachers meeting Sept 1 and 75 to 80 teachers to be named. A high school girls physical education position remains vacant while elementary posts await election results. Roof replacements are planned for Banida Winder Mink Creek Central Jefferson and Preston gym. Bushels of pears offered to support lunch programs under a farm surplus scheme. Nominations for precinct one trustee close Aug 26 for a Sept 2 election. Dr. O R Cutler currently serves.

Oneida Stake Week to Remember Starts Sunday

Oneida stake leaders Deana Wells Willis and Grace Peterson announce a Week to Remember beginning Sunday with a sunrise testimonial at Preston City Park from 6 to 8 am led by co-chairs Lorin Beutler and Joy Winward. Activities include a canyon party at Mink Creek park and a pageant at Oneida stake house It Could Happen To You directed by N S Howells with Wilford Meeks and Geneal Swainston. An Idaho Falls temple excursion leaves Oneida stake house at 3:30 pm Friday with bus transport available for $1.75 per person.

LDS Scandinavians to Convene Here

Scandinavian members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will hold their annual conference and reunion here Saturday and Sunday. Meetings begin Saturday at 2 p m in Franklin stake house with tours and a 7 30 program and dance. Sunday includes two meetings at 10 a m in Preston High School auditorium and 2 p m at Franklin stake house.

Car of Utah Family Hits Local Combine

Ivan Felix and wife of Springville were in a 1951 Chevrolet that struck an Allis-Chalmers combine owned by Bud Thomas on Highway 34 in Riverdale Monday at 3 30 p m. The left front fender of the car and the cutter bar of the combine were damaged. No one was seriously injured. Sheriff Lee Hansen investigated.

Primary Election in County Draws Heavy Interest

Franklin County gears up for a Tuesday primary with a new perforated ballot on the Republican side. Democrats face a single county commissioner contest in district two, while several party hopefuls seek renomination in county offices and state seats.

Dworshak Visits Preston Not Campaigning for Election

Idaho Senator Henry C. Dworshak visited Preston with Mrs. Dworshak to see friends and the rodeo. He stated he is not campaigning as he does not seek re election. Dworshak praised television’s impact on politics and discussed the presidential race between Eisenhower and Stevenson noting a tough contest ahead.

Library to Reopen After Weeklong Closure

Preston's Carnegie library will remain closed through next week for interior cleaning and painting. Librarian Martha Geddes reminded patrons that the library has been closed since Saturday and will reopen Monday, Aug. 18.

Fairview and Winder Areas To Vote On Continuance Saturday

East Side school district No 201 schedules a Saturday election in Fairview and Winder attendance units to decide on continuance. Polls run 2 to 8 pm with the outcome affecting state funding and classroom status. Electors must meet age residency and qualifying criteria including parental or taxpaying status.
